Competency Conversation Preparation PAP1 – Anatomy Physiology and Programming 1. Identify two methods you could provide to warm up a client appropriately for a training session. -Dynamic stretch or Active range of movement (e.g Leg/arm swings or trunk/ankle rotations) -Walking on treadmill or Skipping 2. Why is it important to complete a warm-up session? Provide a minimum of 2 option. -To raise body temperature and increase blood flow to muscles -Reduces delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) -Prevents build up waste products in the muscles leading to early fatigued 3. When conducting a training session, what is the intensity level needed for exercises in the warm-up and the cool-down? Provide a minimum of one option. -Low intensity, Beginners/Medium between 50-60% of max HR, Advanced 60-80% 4. What are some signs that a client might show if they are experiencing fatigue due to excessive intensity or poor exercise tolerance? Provide a minimum of 3 options. -Poor form and technique -Uncontrollable breathing -Only performing partial range of motion movements on all reps -Excessive redness in the face 5. During a warm-up session, if a client presents with an unforeseen condition—such as insufficient sleep or insufficient recovery from previous training sessions—should you modify the sessions? -YES. Modify to a lower intensity workout or reducing work load. (e.g Alternating to bodyweight exercises instead of weighted exercises) 6. Give examples of flexibility training and exercise. Provide a minimum of 2 options -Dynamic stretching. A form of active movement that isn’t about holding a stretch but rather taking your body through ranges of motion that will better prepare you for your workout. -Static stretching. A stretch held in a challenging but comfortable position for a period of time, usually between 10 – 30 seconds. 7. When would you need to refer a client to a medical or allied health professional? -During the Client Screening Phase if there are any risks mentioned in the Questionnaire -During a session if the client shows any abnormal effects to the training 8. Explain the correct techniques needed when a client is undertaking standing cable triceps extension and standing side dumbbell lateral raise. -Standing Cable Tricep Extension: Keeping your abdominal muscles engaged, back straight, and elbows at your sides, push the rope downwards towards your thighs. As you push the rope down split it apart at the bottom to isolate the tricep muscles. Squeeze then return to start position to repeat rep.
-Standing Side Dumbbell Lateral Raises: Stand up straight with feet shoulder-width apart, keep core engaged and back straight. Hold a dumbbell in each hand with palms facing towards the body. Slightly bend at the knees then slowly raise your arms at your sides till palms face the floor. Squeeze shoulder muscles then return to start position to repeat rep. 9. You have five clients booked for a circuit session in the large group exercise room. Identify four factors to appropriately plan the session. -Amount of participants have been taken into account - Allocation of sufficient equipment -Sufficient space and layout suitable to the session -Phases of the session 10. Explain how having an understanding of anatomy and physiology allows you to provide a safe training plan and session to clients. Provide a minimum of 2 options. -Spot warning signs of some medical conditions which can be referred to an Allied Health Professional -Adjust workout sessions to suit medical conditions and enable effective training programs for clients with specific goals 11. How can you maintain your knowledge of anatomy and physiology? Provide a minimum of 1 option. -Continue to study and re-visit study materials via internet. Learn from other industry professionals and support teams. CS2 – Client Screening 1. How would you know a client is dissatisfied with their session, and how would you handle and resolve the situation? Provide a minimum of 3 options. -Client shows disinterest in certain exercise/s: ask client which types of exercises they prefer to incorporate in their next session -Lack of motivation: politely and respectfully remind them of their personal goals taken from the initial Client Screening or any new goals that they have set during your sessions -Feedback: ask the client for feedback to improve future sessions for them in order to be more engaging 2. While conducting training sessions, you must handle your clients professionally. What are some techniques you could use to ensure this occurs? Provide a minimum of 3 options. -Ensure high standards of presentation and hygiene -Be polite and pay attention -Maintain professional boundaries (builds confidentiality and trust) 3. How do you stay current with relevant legislation, including Work Health and Safety, the Privacy Act, anti-discrimination, and duty of care as well as internal policies and procedures? Take annual refresher courses online and ask other industry professionals for more information. 4. During a client screening, you are given personal information. Are you able to provide this information to a third party? No. Confidentiality and Privacy act.
5. How would you establish a client’s likes and dislikes? Provide a minimum of 1 option. Build rapport with the client and ask them questions. Listen and pay attention. 6. During a fitness appraisal, how do you conduct the following? a) Calculate BMI reading: kg/m2 Calculated by dividing your weight in KGs by your height in Metres squared (e.g 70kg/1.65m: 70 divided by (1.65 x 1.65) = 25.7 b) Queen’s College step test: The client steps up and down on a step measuring 41.3cm in height at a rate of 22 steps for minute for females and at 24 steps per minute for males. The clients are to step using a four-step cadence, ‘up-up-down-down’ for 3 minutes. The client stops immediately on completion of the test and the heart beats are counted for 15 seconds from 5-20 seconds of recovery. Multiply the 15 second reading by 4 and it will give you the beats per minute (BPM) value to be used to calculate the VO2max. c) Push-up test: Complete as many push ups as possible till failure or loss of form 7. What is the healthy BMI range for a female and a male? 18.5 – 24.9 is considered as healthy or normal. 8. What are some of the tools used when conducting a client’s fitness appraisal? Provide a minimum of 4 options. -Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire Form -ESSA Adult Pre Exercise Screening Tool -Lifestyle Questionnaire -Referral Letter -Fitness Appraisal Form 9. While training a client, you notice that a piece of equipment is faulty. In relation to risk management, what is your responsibility to manage the situation to eliminate or reduce potential injury to other facility members? Advise management immediately, remove the equipment if possible or put a “Do not Use” warning sign on the equipment. 10. How can you ensure the safety of your client when training them? Provide a minimum of 2 options. -Pay attention to their form and technique to reduce risk of injuries - Checking to make sure equipment is in safe and working order before the client uses it -Knowing your client’s capabilities, not exceeding them above normal regression 11. If a client presents with sharp chest pains during a session, what must you do? Stop the workout immediately and place client in a comfortable position. SPOA3 – Special Populations and Older Adults 1. Describe three types of modification that you can implement to a training session if a client shows signs of intolerances. -Lower intensity/workload -Shorter duration -Longer recovery period 2. What modification would occur to a client’s program structure if they changed their fitness goals? Provide a minimum of three options. -Intensity -Duration -Frequency of sessions 3. When developing a program for an elderly client, what are two factors you must consider? -Age/Weaker bone density -Fitness level/cardio vascular deficiency 4. When would you use the Borg Scale? The Borg scale is a method of rating perceived exertion and can be used to gauge an athlete’s level of intensity in training and competition 5. What are some techniques that you can use to ensure that clients from diverse backgrounds are not discriminated against? Speak clearly and understand the client’s background, use very visual demonstrations 6. When completing a referral letter, list a minimum of five elements that must be included. 1. Client’s name 2. Reason for referral 3. Result’s from Pre-exercise screening 4. Date of the Letter 5. Request for guidance 6. In the creation of a referral letter, you will have access to personal information about your clients. Is it acceptable to discuss the content with a medical professional without the client’s permission? No 7. During a cardiovascular fitness test, a client speaks to you continually. Is this acceptable? Explain why or why not. No. In order to get the correct data or results the environment needs to be controlled. Talking can be a distraction from completing the test properly therefore can give false readings. (e.g Heart rate, Blood pressure) 8. After you complete a program, should you self-evaluate your performance? Provide 1 reason why. Yes. There is always room for improvement to ensure your client gets the most of each session.
