Jessica Singh PSY:2501:0AAA March 19, 2024 1. Which IAT did you complete, and what were the typical/average IAT results for most people? I completed the Gender-Science IAT. The typical/average IAT results for a majority of the populace is 29% moderately associating males with science and females with liberal arts (followed by 23% strongly associating males with science and females with liberal arts). 19% of individuals had little to no association between gender and academic domains (category I fell in). 2. Did your self-reported explicit attitudes match your implicit attitudes as measured by the IAT? My self-reported explicit attitudes (as a healthcare employee , student, and female) matched my implicit attitudes as measured by the IAT. I had little to no association between female and male with science and liberal arts. Nonetheless, science is a male-dominated field due to the masculine society, insufficient early knowledge, and gender voids in self-efficiency. The specified stereotypes can explain females having decreased representation in science. Liberal arts (prominently associated with low-paying positions) is female-dominated (gender stereotypes and lack of female exposure to STEM can be accounting factors). 3. What do you think these results suggest about prejudice toward the groups targeted in the IAT? These results suggest that specified gender stereotypes and implied prejudices can impact a female’s preference and interest in STEM fields. It can essentially hinder females from developing skills obligated within these specializations. Thus, male-dominated fields/careers tend to stay male-dominated.
