In the article, “Don’t try this at home”: Toddlers imitation of new skills from people on video” authors Strouse and Troseth conducted studies in an attempt to fathom whether children can learn from people on video like how they learn from real people in real time. This would be known as imitation. Imitation is when an individual learns from another individual by viewing their actions. When it comes to younger children, it is well known that imitation can have a huge influence on their cognitive development during their younger years. However, it is worth noting that while most children may learn through imitation, every child is different and has diverse learning preferences. With imitation some may not be aware of the importance of it and how it can impact a child's cognitive development. Strouse and Troseth state that an important attribute of human cognition is the capability to take advantage of the knowledge and skills of individuals who are more experienced (Strouse & Troseth, 2008). This is especially important for younger children since through imitation children can observe and learn new skills that are beneficial to their growth. The course textbook states that imitation starts to become important in a child's first year of life as they are learning new skills ( Martorell, 2020, p. 46). Some of these cognitive development skills include thinking, reasoning, and understanding. After reading this study it was interesting to gain a clearer understanding of how children learn differently through contrasting ways depending on their age. This study shows that depending on the child's age, their cognitive development skills, and ability to imitate may improve from watching adults on video. For children aged 2-6 video-based learning can be deemed beneficial and has a positive effect on a child’s development. However, this is not the case for children under 3 years of age. Children 3 and under do not learn from the information
they obtain through video like how they would when the information is given to them directly ( Strouse & Troseth, 2008). Before reading this study, I always wondered why it was so common for most parents to have their children engage in videos on iPads, phones, etc. Interacting with children on a more personal level such as singing songs, reading books and much more was how I viewed the way that a child should be learning. This study shows that through technology and video-based learning children can in fact advance their development and learn new skills by imitating and learning from the individuals seen in these videos. While this may be beneficial, I still believe that there should be a balance between interacting and instructing your child on a more personal level while also allowing them to have screen time since both methods could be beneficial to the child. Since screen time seems to be a method that is beneficial to the development of a child, for parents it is important to monitor the shows that their children are viewing. This is important since from these videos children are imitating the lessons that are being taught. One would not want their child imitating a lesson that is negative or harmful. Another thing parents should keep in mind is the amount of screen time they allow their children to have. While it can be beneficial there are also health risks that are attached to too much screen time such as bad sleep habits, depression, and obesity. Too much screen time can also affect brain development in children who are younger (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, 2019). When it comes to Faith, imitation has an influence on an individual's religion. From an early age, children are taught about religion through their parents and learn to imitate and observe the lessons taught to them about faith. As Christians we are taught to imitate God and follow his word in order to obtain a life that is joyful and rewarding. Scripture 3 John 1:11 states,
