PSY 302 Spring B Module 1 Video Analysis Martin Seligman March 16, 2023 What is good about the disease model? The positive about the disease model is that through the $30 billion investment NIMH made helped psychologist treat fourteen disorders and cure two of them. Mental health became a science which concepts that were difficult to understand are conceptualized such as depression and alcoholism. The disease model evaluates genetics and the probability of people with schizophrenia or behaviors in parents such as mothers. The is now experiments that can be done to help mental illness. Medications ease mental illness and can help people not be as ill as they would be without medications. What is not good about the disease model? Psychologists focused on people with disorders opposed helping untroubled people. They forgot about creating and improving people’s lives that were normal. They didn’t pay attention to helping people become happier. They didn’t work on interventions to create a positive life. Psychologist had forgotten about building strength, interested in best things for all people, and nurturing people with talents. They had forgotten to realize positive psychology can exist. What are the three types of “happy” lives and their characteristics? The pleasant life and their characteristics is having many as pleasures, positive emotions, and learning new skills as well as savoring mindfulness. They try to keep the pleasures longer, even after the pleasurable acts are done. Unfortunately, the drawback is habituates can not be as pleasurable for a long time. It is not flexible and therefore the pleasures only last a certain period of time. The good life is capable of flow, such as Seligman’s friend Len who can spend time working and focusing on that only. In flow the person doesn’t feel anything and they are one with the activity they are doing. Another characteristic is knowing your strengths and adjusting your life to use your strengths to improve work and love or other relationships. The meaningful life is using your strengths for something greater than yourself. Philanthropy can cause people to have happiness longer because they are not only using their strengths but helping people. In combination doing something fun, this type of happy life is the most rewarding. The pursuit of pleasure didn’t add to life satisfaction. Why is hedonism limited in creating “life satisfaction?” Finding meaning is the strongest, then having engagement, and pleasure just adds on to happiness like a cherry on top of a sundae. Finding meaning is truly the key to happiness. Without meaningful connections, without using your strength to help others, and without finding a flow, humans will not be able to keep positive lives therefore not happy.
