Hi Angela, Along with you and I, there seems to be a number of us that were drawn in by the article, The Myth of the Teen Brain. This article definitely sheds light on just how important it is for researchers to consider the entire picture and not just one aspect of the picture. What I mean by this is the age-old debate of nature vs. nature. Within this article, the author presents clear data that culture is extremely relative to cognitive development, just as nature’s contribution. Continuously leaning on the blanket theories to understand one group, despite the one group’s socio-cultural imprinting, we lessen our opportunity to obtain a greater understanding. I really enjoyed your post this week and I wish you all the best and my God bless you on your doctoral journey! Blessings, Hi Sarah, Your post grabbed my attention as it aligns closely with my proposed research topic. My research focuses on the parent-child interaction and how imperative it is to cognitive development. You are correct, while the parent educational background plays a small role, it is not the key issue. Parent-child interaction is so much more. Yes, it would be great to have school to encourage the parent-child interaction; however, it is imperative to ensure that the is indeed constructive. One of the things I’ve discovered during this research process is, while we are expecting parents to provide a level of support, they are completely oblivious to how to do so. If a parent has never received affirmation, support, or encouragement of any kind, they may be uncertain of what constructive support looks like. How do we ensure that we are building not only the children, but the parent(s) as well once they leave from the school environment? Once again, I really enjoyed your post and I think that you are an asset to the school in which you work. I pray for your doctoral journey and may God bless you in all that you do. Blessings.
