The united nations is an international organization founded in October 1945. After the previous failure of the League of Nations during the World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed the idea to create a new organization that would serve in order to prevent such inadequacy again.(Cobb, 2020) This group is now currently made up of 193 members whose mission is to be “guided by the purposes and principles contained by its founding charter”. This
charter was ratified by majority of the countries back in 1945, and is still active today. This organizations main purpose is to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation, and be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations. Ultimately this organization acts as an international group that is allowed
police other nations in order to keep the world safe and at peace. The UN has five principal groups: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the International Court of Justice, and the UN Secretariat. The general assembly is responsible for deciding on important questions that can either threaten or enhance global security or peace by putting them to a vote. The security council is responsible for maintaining peace and security through making “recommendations” to countries. the UN secretariat provides studies, information, and data that other principal groups may need in order to come to conclusions. The international court of justice is to settle disputes amongst countries that related to war crimes and illegal interference. The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) can be split into different groups and therefor can be deemed unnecessary. (United Nations, 2020)
The UN as a complicated past in its earlier years when it comes to keeping world peace that transcend into today. Often the UN is criticized for being “inefficient and ineffective as well as being unable to ensure global peace”. I believe the UN is wildly ineffective because they are unable to enforce anything they do because of the fact that they have no military. From the cold war, to Nazi Germany, all the way to global warming, the UN is able to identify problems but ultimately the can never enforce any policies. (Cobb, 2020)
