PART I: Political Parties Note: Do not recopy what someone else has stated about the differences between political parties and interest groups. 1. What are the differences between political parties and interest groups? It is to be known that the differences between interest groups and political parties are more important than the similarities. The textbook states, “a group becomes an interest group when it seeks to affect the policies or practices of the government,” and, “political parties provide a way for the public to choose who will serve in government and which policies will be carried out” (Sidlow, 2019). Competition between the two groups occurs to see which one has more power. With interest groups only care about one problem, political parties watch over multiple issues. This is one of the main differences between the two. Trying to hold together and create broad coalitions is what Political Parties try and accomplish. According to the University of Indiana, “ They want to be able to govern effectively over a range of issues. Interest groups do not care about broad coalitions. They only care about winning on their particular issue” (Wright, 2020). Part II: Interest Group Note: Name/discuss an interest group that no one else has posted about for this discussion. There should not be duplicates. 1. (a) Name an interest group you find to be most influential in politics. (b) Explain the reason. (c) Give an example, not mentioned in the textbook. (a/c) National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) (b) The mission of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors is to advocate for a positive legislative and regulatory environment, enhance business and professional skills, and promote the ethical conduct of our members. The total of contributions to candidates from Natl Assn/Insurance & Financial Advisors PACs is 849 times larger than contributions from individuals. The money that came from the organizations Political Action Committees (PAC) contributed $2,361,648 toward lobbying for 2020 Election Cycle (Open Secrets, 2020).
