Discussion Questions
1.
Should the mission of the armed forces include stepping in to save the nation, even at the expense of democratic liberties?
Yes, under certain circumstances I do believe that the mission of the armed forces should include
stepping in to save the nation, even at the expense of democratic liberties. Armed Forces are established to protect a nation from foreign and domestic threats. This is to include internal and external issues. The armed forces are backed up with trained personnel, and funding to eliminate a threat. I believe there must be a give-and-take approach when issues like saving the nation arise
but at the same time, there must be rules in place and assurance that those democratic liberties will be returned. A good example of what not to do is that of Argentine and the “Dirty Wars” were thousands of people disappeared, killed, or tortured This was an abuse of power and human
rights violations that were not necessary.
2.
Was the Argentine military coup necessary, considering the violent political environment?
The violent political environment in Argentina during the early 1970s was indeed something that
needed to be addressed. The left-wing Peronist group known as the Montoneros were committing
mass political kidnappings, bombings, shootings, and assassinations. This violence resulted in the retaliatory right-wing “Anticommunist Alliance paramilitary”. This paramilitary group is responsible for the Argentine military coup, but they also used state-sponsored terroristic attacks such as “Torture, murder, assassinations, and “disappearances”. Neither group was correct in this
case and although I believe the violence needed to be addressed the coup only made things worse. 3.
Was the Chilean military coup justifiable, considering the damage Allende’s policies
had caused the economy and the influx of communist aid and left-wing activists?
No violent coups are ever justified. Although Allende’s policies were damaging the economy in Chile he would have been voted out of office after his term. The death of more than 3,000 people
during the regime following the coup could never be justified by a damaged economy.
4.
What are the reasons for the strong undercurrent of fascism in many Latin American armed forces?
There are a few reasons for the strong undercurrent of fascism in many Latin American countries. One of these reasons is the strong ideological influence of Spanish fascism in Latin America brought on by the Franco regime. The Second reason is that the neofascist organizations
prevalent in Latin American countries presented themselves as defenders of fundamental national values (military duty, the Christian Church, and motherhood), and at the same time they scapegoat undesirable demographic groups and viewpoints. Fascism was anti-Communist, antimonarchist, antidemocratic, and anti-intellectual. Many of these Latin American countries had a lower education rate and were culturally and religiously conservative.
5.
To what degree did the United States benefit from the coups in Chile and Argentina? To what degree was the United States harmed by these coups?
The United States stood to benefit from both the coup in Argentina and Chile. Salvador Allende's
Policies of nationalizing industries could be viewed as actively harming the United States economically. The United States also benefitted by supporting General Augusto Pinochet as they
could not have a socialist government that they could have no influence over, especially one that was seeking advisement from communist countries. This fear of the spread of communism also applied to the coup that took place in Argentina. The ford administration offered rightist military regimes counterinsurgency training as well as financial assistance and intelligence briefings.
