1 The Great Resignation and Meaningful Work Post-Pandemic Serena Jimenez ECPI University MGT524: Ethics and Corporate Responsibility Dr. Duane O Stephens November 26, 2023
2 The Great Resignation and Meaningful Work Post-Pandemic What would make work more “meaningful” for me is if it aligns with my personal values and interests, allows me to utilize my skills and talents, and contributes positively to society or a particular community. It would also be meaningful to me that I am able to utilize my criminal justice degree and not feel as though it is being wasted. Meaningful work to me is waking up in the morning ready to start the day and get to work because it is fulfilling and not as most people do when they dread going to work and hate being there. In my own opinion, the attractiveness of work-from-home depends on individual preferences. It may be more attractive for some due to the flexibility and comfort that it offers. However, for other people, it may be less attractive due to the lack of social interaction and potential difficulties in separating work and personal life. “In 2023, remote workers reported being less stressed than their in-office and hybrid counterparts. This could be due to a number of factors, such as no commuting time, less overall spending of money, more time to focus, etc. In fact, hybrid workers - who have the option to work both in-office and from home - say that working from home is best for tasks like working independently, focusing, thinking creatively, and balancing work and life.” (Owl Lab Staff, 2023) I believe that providing "meaningful work" should be a basic duty of employers. It not only benefits the employees by increasing their job satisfaction and motivation, but also benefits the employers by improving productivity and reducing turnover. “In fact, research shows that meaningfulness is more important to us than any other aspect of our jobs — including pay and rewards, opportunities for promotion, and working conditions. When we experience our work as meaningful, we’re more engaged, committed, and satisfied.” (Evgenia I. Lysova, 2023)
