Elide Oyanedel Week 2 Personal Ethical Views Essay
Ethics affects everyone is every single aspect of life, school, work, politics, where we invest our money and any other institution that has the power to make large decisions that will affect others, it is important that we know what ethical values our leaders, learning institution, and workplace. Utilitarian ethics, also known as consequentialist, is solely based on the outcome of the actions taken. “The action is good if the consequences are good” (Homer, 2021) Utilitarian approach can be problematic in many ways for instance if someone makes a decision that benefits themselves and ghets desired result then they are not thinking how their actions or decision may affect anyone else involved this ethical approach is similar to the Famous Machiavelli philosophy of the ends justify the means. Deontological ethics is based on the actions only being good if they follow the rules set by an outside source no matter the outcome. “Action is good if it follows the rules” (Homer, 2021) I would like to think that everyone follows this ethical belief, but we
know that is not true. This can be applied in different settings, for example in the workplace and a learning institution will have different set of rules. Virtue ethics focuses on the person life as a while, determine actions are moral if they follow the persons virtues, “The action is good if it’s what a virtuous person would do.” (Holmer, 2021) Virtue ethics can cause some problems if a person is acting upon their own beliefs they aren’t thinking of other people’s beliefs, just like in utilitarianism are not thinking of how their actions may affect others.
Elide Oyanedel Week 2 Communitarian ethics focuses on ideas shaped by social relations (Bell, 2020) In a perfect world I would take a piece of each ethical philosophy to do what is needed. I currently work in a large personal injury law firm, and no matter how big or small a promotion is, it seems like people with existing relationships with managers or partners are getting the upper hand despite their qualifications. these coworkers whether they may be aware it or not are part of the ethical problem of Nepotism. Nepotism is described as “favoritism shown to relatives, especially in appointment to desirable positions”. Nepotism is a current ethical issue that is receiving a lot of attention in Hollywood. In December of 2022 the New York Magazine cover was
titles “ Nepo Baby Boom” in this cover eight celebrities were in cribs with their faces superimposed on to babies bodies, along with the image the cover read : she has her mothers eyes and her agent” to further depict the issue of nepotism. Neporism is something that happens almost everywhere and really only affect the people who are getting looked over because of family and friend connections. If I was in our Human Resources department, I would implement a set of procedures and regulations in order for promotions to be granted. The first rule would be that all promotions should be open for all employees to apply within, and a panel of managers and partners would have to make decisions based on merit and not personal relationships. By adapting this approach, we can set regulations based on the Deontological approach.
