Critical Thinking Questions
Answer the following questions and upload to your Moodle course.
1.
Have digital channels changed the nature of communication?
Yes, the digital era has allowed us to communicate faster and get the message
across instantaneously.
If there is a tight deadline then one may need to pass a
message across instantly, then passing an email or sending a text will be a great
option.
2.
Why do you think employers prefer messages that are not written like high-
school writing?
I think the main reason they don't want to see a message in essay form either
high school or college is that they don't need all the fillers added to the
message.
There is no specific need for university level big words and your
thoughts on how you feel about the matter is irrelevant. You only need to get to
the point across and not babble about the subject. It should usually only a few
seconds for the receiver to glance over your e-mail if it takes longer they may
junk it or will have to take time out of their busy schedule and
try and figure out
the key elements of what you are trying to say. Shortness and clarity are what
counts in a business message as some think time is money and to have to read a
lengthy email is a waste of time when it can be simplified and straight to the
point.
3.
Why should business writers strive to use short, familiar, simple words?
Does this oversimplify business messages?
The use of short familiar words to make the message clearer is what a business
writer should strive for. This allows messages to be easily read and understood.
It doesn't dumb down the message, but business writing needs to be clear and
concise so there is nothing that can be misinterpreted.
A wise observer once said that bad writing makes smart people look less
intelligent. Do you agree or disagree, and why?

Drafting a message with a clear outcome with all the factors to support that
outcome, puts you ahead. We need to look for opportunities to simplify, tighten,
and remove fillers from our writing. Remove anything that distracts from the
primary message. Eliminate fancy words. To communicate effectively, reduce the
distance between you and your reader. When using a thesaurus, we need to
watch the use of words, as even though they are synonyms they can still be
used incorrectly, I have found on a personal level that not all big words have the
same meaning as the overall meaning of the message that you are wanting to
send. Sometime the use of larger, or bigger words takes away from the message
because the word is a message in itself.
4.
In a letter to the editor, a teacher criticized a newspaper article on autism
because it used the term
autistic child
rather than
child with autism
. She
championed
people-first
terminology, which avoids defining individuals by their
ability or disability.
For example, instead of identifying someone as a
disabled
person
, one would say,
she has a disability
. What does
people-first language
mean? How can language change perceptions?
“People First Language” (PFL) puts the person before the disability, and
describes what a person has, not who a person is.
Language can change perception in ways that do not fulfill the entirety of
information. A person disabled or not should not be defined as to what they can
or can not do or achieve. On a personal note, for me identifying someone with a
disability sometimes allows others to interpreted in what they are limited to do,
or if they do not look like they have a disability it is interpreted that there is no
reason why they could not accomplish a task. The “People first language allows
for inclusion of information. Whereas if we identified someone and not the
disability it offers more in-depth information of both the person and the disability.
Using Autism as the example in a whole it is autism but individually each person
can accomplish different tasks with a wide range of level on the spectrum. So on
that note I do not agree with PFL as it groups all disabilities and people and does
not make them an the unique individual they are.
