2/6/23, 9:11 PM Concept Test #1 Guide https://learn.mru.ca/d2l/le/content/35907/viewContent/393356/View 1/2 The test will focus on the key concepts appearing in our course so far and that serve as a founda±on for thinking about the idea of "peace," peacebuilding, and their rela±onship to past conflicts. As you prepare for the test, keep in mind that the purpose of an exam or test is for students to demonstrate their learning and mastery of the material in a course of study. What can you bring into the test? One sheet, 8"x11", with notes wri²en on both sides. The test will be handwri²en. Exam booklets will be provided. You will have the full 80 minutes to write the test. Es±mated ±me to complete the test is 50 minutes. The test takes place in our regular classroom and is the only thing we will do in that class on the day of the test, which leaves room for some students who might like to take a li²le extra ±me. The test will consist of a few Mul±ple Choice ques±ons, True/False ques±ons, and wri²en answers. There is no essay in this test. In prepara±on for the test, review your notes on the class lectures, discussions, and readings and be prepared to provide grounded and though³ul answers to the following ques±ons: 1. Peace as "a conversa±on" - what did Lederach mean? Is the Melian dialogue (Thucydides) and interac±on an example of Lederach's no±on of peace as a conversa±on? Explain. Is Bartolomé de Las Casas' efforts on behalf of the Amerindians an example of Lederach's no±on? Explain. What do the two documentaries - A Time for Burning AND As We Forgive - illustrate the challenges of holding this kind of conversa±on? How does Lederach exemplify this no±on of "conversa±on" in his four stories found in The Moral Imagina±on According to Gandhi, Dorothy Day, Mar±n Luther King Jr., Desmond Tutu, HH the Dalai Lama, and Wangari Maathai, what would they suggest should be included in this conversa±on? 2. Peace as a product of "moral imagina±on" - what did Lederach mean? How might we describe the "moral imagina±on" of the Athenians and the leaders from the Island of Melios? How did Bartolomé de Las Casas demonstrate Lederach's no±on of "moral imagina±on"? What elements of "moral imagina±on" can be found in the two documentaries - A Time for Burning AND As We Forgive - and what appears to be missing in terms of a "moral imagina±on? Compare the no±on of "moral imagina±on" to specific ideas we found in the our reading of Gandhi, Dorothy Day, Mar±n Luther King Jr., Malcom X, Desmond Tutu, HH the Dalai Lama, and Wangari Maathai? 3. Peace as "reconcilia±on" and "forgiveness" - what are the complexi±es, problems, and challenges in defining and applying these terms? What (whom) have we read or viewed that exemplifies these concepts and the complexi±es, problems, and challenges they bring? Compare (and by implica±on contrast) the no±on of "reconcilia±on" to the Lederach's no±on of "peace as a conversa±on." How might no±ons of "reconcilia±on" relate to Wangari Maathi's peacebuilding efforts and The Green Belt Movement? What implica±ons might reconcilia±on and forgiveness have for Canadians and our own context?
2/6/23, 9:11 PM Concept Test #1 Guide https://learn.mru.ca/d2l/le/content/35907/viewContent/393356/View 2/2 If the two no±ons are so fraught with challenges, why do peacebuilders keep using these terms? Structure of the test (40 points + 2 bonus points): Mul±-select, True/False, and Mul±ple Choice - 15 points Paragraph Answer Ques±on (you will have a choice between two ques±ons - ~250 words) - 15 points Two short answer ques±ons (~100 words each) - 10 points Bonus ques±on (2 points)
