1 Moral Dilemma Concerning Cultural Diversity and Multiculturalism Student’s Name Institution Affiliation Course Professor’s Name Date
2 Moral Dilemma Concerning Cultural Diversity and Multiculturalism Cultural diversity refers to the availability of many cultural groups within a society. Moral dilemma, on the other hand, refers to a situation in which one has to make a difficult choice entailing a moral principle. In this report, the scenario of Tariq, my close, who was judged due to his dressing, is addressed as the moral dilemma that arose. Tariq hails from the countryside and has little knowledge of how people in the city dress or city culture due to his lack of exposure. He is annoyed about the whole situation and admits to me how the entire situation troubles him as people make fun of him and do not want to associate with him. The dilemma involves what action to take as his best friend: whether to remain neutral and not get involved or take action in addressing the discrimination. This report, therefore, addresses the moral dilemma concerning cultural diversity and multiculturalism. A subjective moral relativist would argue that whatever I think is right for myself is what I should stick with and not allow anyone to tell me any differently. This subjective moral relativist approach argues that someone is sovereign to the principles that dictate their life. In this case, it is entirely up to me to do what I think is right, and I should not allow anyone else to tell me what to decide, even if it is getting myself involved. The subjective moral relativist approach, therefore, recommends that there are no objective standards to judge actions taken. A cultural relativist would argue that it is good to give respect and not judge a particular culture to its standards. It is, therefore, not good and healthy for people to impose their cultures on other people, as different cultures have different beliefs and practices. I should let Tariq, who was involved in that cultural conflict issue, address the matter to the best of his understanding and not get myself involved.
