Consider the track you are in, leader, educator, or practitioner. Describe a hypothetical issue related to the track and design a brief quality improvement project. Describe the problem, the project, and how you would evaluate the outcomes of the project. Adjusting From Registered Nurse to Advanced Practice Nurse As a student enrolled in the PMHNP program I can see the transition from RN to NP being an issue. Research has shown that new nurse practitioners will experience a considerable role change in their first year of practice. Nurses have relied on Benner’s Theory of Transition, which outlines that a nurse begins as a novice and transitions into an expert (Elite Learning, 2015). In addition, Benner’s theory can be applied to hypothesize that the experienced RN feels established in his or her role as a nurse and now senses insecurity as a novice NP. To elaborate more this concept further describes a loss of confidence and increased anxiety as the expert RN becomes a novice NP. The steps to improve the issue would be as followed. Step one would be “laying the groundwork.” In this step the NP would focus on graduating, passing boards, choosing a specialty, and finding a job. Step two would be for the NP to start the new job. Here the NP would have the feelings of anxiety, worry, and doubt, etc. Step three in the project would be when the NP starts to become more efficient and becomes more comfortable with the job and duties. The final stage in the project would for the NP to add new challenges and take on more. To evaluate the project surveys could be done to evaluate the effectiveness, readiness, and confidence of the NPs. For me I think this is going to be one of the most challenging jobs as an NP. I am comfortable and confident in my current role as an RN and soon I will be doing something completely new that has a different scope of practice. Elite Learning. (2015, November 17). RN-to-NP role transition . https://www.elitelearning.com/resource-center/nursing/rn-to-np-role-transition/ Hi Olivia, Are posts being similar in that we are both on the NP track and we both focused on an issue that can have long term effects. I agree with you that burnout is causing a lot of job strain. At my current job I see a lot of burnout with the new NPs and PA’s. The stress of the new job, lack of confidence and taking on more than they cane handle leads to this burnout. I like your idea regarding the BREATH method. Another approach, which is similar is the mindfulness-based interventions. According to Yıldırım & Çiriş Yıldız (2022), mindfulness practice attention focuses on breathing, body sensations, thoughts, and emotions to deal with stress.   Focusing on breathing serves as the groundwork for mindfulness-based practices, and it is performed for raising individual awareness, promoting self-control, and reducing the effect of stress factors.

I am also in the PMHNP program and have been looking for clinical sites in my area. This has been a struggle finding a preceptor/clinical site. The COVID-19 pandemic has made the preceptor shortage worse by causing justified and widespread concern among the healthcare community ( The Significance of the NP Preceptorship Shortage , n.d.). Paying a NP preceptor for clinical hours is not a new concept, but a strongly debated one in academic circles, many NPs feel that having been taught themselves by preceptors, it   is their duty and a moral imperative to precept future NPs ( The Significance of the NP Preceptorship Shortage , n.d.). In addition, a published study about preceptor incentives found that reimbursement was the third most common reason that providers precept NP students.
