Ethics in healthcare
The Tuskegee Study is a term used to describe a human experiment involving untreated
syphilis. One of the oldest nontherapeutic tests on humans in the history of medicine used Black
males as the subjects. The initial goal of the study was to ascertain the untreated latent syphilis
natural course in some African American men at Tuskegee, Macon County, Alabama
(Reverby,
2022)
. Basic bioethical concepts including respect for autonomy, non-maleficence, and justice
were violated by the Tuskegee study. When the experiment's participants were never completely
informed of the research's methodology for them to make independent decisions, autonomy was
demonstrated. Since only African Americans were selected to take part in this experiment,
participants suffered injuries, therapy or panacea was withheld when it became the preferred
treatment, and justice was violated.
The committee concluded that the study was "ethically unjustified." This indicated that
the results were disproportionate to the perceived risks to those involved. It was not possible to
get the participant's informed consent. The men were claimed to be receiving treatment for "bad
blood," a colloquial term for several ailments including syphilis, anemia, and weariness when
researchers first approached them. In exchange, they received a free health check, free meals,
and funeral insurance
(Reverby, 2022)
. When humans are involved in the study process, ethical
concerns are frequently raised. Children, the homeless, and individuals with impairments are the
groups most frequently targeted in the experimental study that is highlighted. It is crucial to
follow the guidelines for conducting research, so do so. Honesty, integrity, objectivity, care,
transparency, non-discrimination, legality, secrecy, competence, protection of human subjects,
and animal care are among the fundamental ethics of research principles.
The Tuskegee syphilis study violated the ethical standards that govern research involving
human beings, which poses several morally troubling questions. Racism, informed consent,
stating the truth, paternalism, and the use of dishonesty in research are among the problems.
Research is labeled as unethical when it is carried out in a manner that goes against the standards
of ethics or when researchers do experiments that are too extreme. A crucial ethical need in
clinical studies involving humans is the concept of freely informed consent. The medical expert
is required to make sure that the chosen study subjects are given thorough information regarding
the associated medical procedures
