Happy Tuesday Everybody, Smoking among adolescents is a global epidemic, presenting significant health risks and economic implications for public health (Perry et al, 1994; Kessler, 1995). This pertains specifically to cigarette smoking, as tobacco encompasses other smoking substances. According to Anderson (2010), smoking contributes to 75% of American healthcare expenditure. Despite extensive awareness initiatives, one in four high school teens are smokers, with half succumbing to smoking-related ailments in adulthood (Fagerstrom, 2002). These outcomes have had profound repercussions on individuals, families, and the nation at large. There are numerous strategies that can be implemented to deter adolescent smoking. However, for the purpose of this composition, our focus will be on delineating two specific strategies: Setting a good example. In accordance with Collins (2021), leading by example serves to foster and motivate individuals to emulate similar behaviors. Adolescents are particularly receptive to observational learning, and thus, in instances where a parent engages in smoking in the presence of their adolescent, there exists a heightened likelihood that the adolescent will adopt smoking habits at some point. It is advisable to support smoking parents in their cessation efforts through the utilization of cessation aids such as nicotine patches and lozenges until successful cessation is achieved (MFMER 1998-2021). Cost. In the United States, legislators are currently deliberating on the potential increase of taxes on cigarettes in select states, which notably places a financial burden on smokers (RAI Services Company, 2019). For instance, in New York, the cost of a pack of cigarettes is $12, with 77% of this amount being allocated to the government in the form of taxes. To assist my adolescent client, I intend to aid in calculating the financial expenditure associated with smoking, highlighting the alternative valuable uses for these funds. Utilizing infographics, I aim to visually convey the substantial financial burden incurred and the subsequent undesirable behaviors that may ensue (CDC, 2011-2015). Notably, the client may resort to borrowing or even engaging in theft to fulfill the craving for cigarettes. The issue of teenage smoking requires a collective effort from various stakeholders including parents, educational institutions, communities, and the government. It is imperative to implement comprehensive programs aimed at educating and reinforcing awareness among teenagers regarding the adverse effects of smoking.
