Corey Casey-Brown 07/29/2023 Week 4 summative assessment Energy Skate Park Conservation of Energy Observations 1. For this simulation I followed the steps in the study guide. I clicked the intro in the simulator. I also clicked the energy bars and it showed Kinetic, Potential, And Thermal Energy. I clicked the chart which is the pie chart, the speed tracker, and I also clicked stick to the path. I selected the dog to be my skater. I clicked the slow button. I placed the dog on the skate track that was shaped like the letter V and the dog was moving slowly and the potential energy started to rise. I added friction to the simulator and the thermal energy started rising. It reminds me of when I get out of a swimming pool, I feel very heavy when I get out of the water. As the dog was going up the potential energy was rising, and as the dog was going down the kinetic energy was going was rising. I moved the dog to the skate track that was shaped like the letter L. I placed the dog on the track and the potential energy started to rise. As the dog was going down the kinetic energy started rising and the potential energy was getting low. The skater’s speed was 10.2 m/s. My hypothesis is the same thing. Adding all that extra friction to the skater shows that the thermal energy will begin to rise, and the kinetic and potential energy will start to decrease. I added the dog on the track shaped like the letter W. When I placed him on the track, the potential energy began to rise, and the kinetic energy began to rise as the dog go down the track. The potential energy shows that the dog is very light, and the kinetic energy shows that the dog is starting to get very heavy on the skate track like he was 100 lbs soaking wet. Thermal energy reminds me of a teapot on a stove. It is the energy possessed within the object due to the movement of the particles within the object or system. My overall hypothesis is the skateboarder goes down the ramp and potential energy changes to kinetic energy. Because of all the friction and all the extra weight added to the skateboarder, most of that energy in the simulation is converted to heat/thermal energy. Once all that kinetic energy is lost and converted to heat, the energy that was lost on the skateboarder will not be converted back to kinetic or potential energy. Kinetic energy is the energy an object has because of its motion. It shows that heat temperatures began to rise in the wheels of the skateboard and the wheels will slow down. Potential energy refers to the stored energy within an object that exists as a result of the object’s position, state, or arrangement. All this energy transforms into gravitational energy.
Corey Casey-Brown 07/29/2023 Week 4 summative assessment Energy Skate Park Conservation of Energy 2. In the simulation I followed the steps and made observations on everything I did in the simulation. I even did an overall hypothesis on all the skateboard ramps and made an educated guess for each ramp. I explained that it reminded me of a swimming pool and I also explained how the kinetic and potential energy transferred to thermal energy when heat began to rise in the wheels of the skateboard. 3. Questions 1. How does that energy change from kinetic, potential, and thermal energy? 2. Does kinetic and potential energy change to thermal-based off movement? 3. Is this the way skiing works also with the energy changes compared to skateboarding? 4. Reading Ideas Comparing my observations to the reading I spoke about everything that the book stated beside the swimming pool part. The book spoke on thermal energy and I stated what thermal energy was. 5. Descriptions The simulation helped me get better at how energy works. It showed me how the energy changes during movement. 6.
