MATH 205: Concepts and Structures II
Project 2
Fall 2023
Titanic Project
Project 2: Titanic Data Investigation
The Titanic Data CODAP file (
https://tinyurl.com/Math205Titanic
) contains information about the actual passengers aboard the Titanic, the ship that famously sunk April 1912. For Project 2, you will create a variety of data displays to explore the data and answer a series of questions. Save this document as your project. For each task, copy the data display and type your answers in the
(
yellow) boxes
as indicated.
Note, when a task requests a “rate” this should be stated as a percent or a proportion; a rate is not a frequency count. For example, the statement “45% of the boys on the Titanic survived” uses a rate, in comparison to “29 boys on the Titanic survived” is a statement that incorporates a
frequency (count).

MATH 205 Fall 2023
Titanic Project
Task 1 (5 points)
a)
(1 pt) Below is a pie graph that shows the proportion of each class of passengers on the Titanic. Using the pie graph, estimate the percent that each class is of the total Titanic census.
Passenger Class Estimates (percentages)
First Class
25%
Second Class
23%
Third Class
52%
b)
(2 pts) Create a data display in CODAP that employs the percent feature to verify that your estimates in part (a) are accurate. Copy and paste the data display you created with the percentages visible in the space below
. (
Note:
You are not expected to create pie chart. CODAP does not let you create pie charts. Try other type of graphs (e.g., bar graph).)
Your graph with percentages visible:

c)
(2 pts) Which class of passengers was greatest on the Titanic? Discuss how your estimates from part (a) compare with the actual percentages found in part (b).
Your response: The majority of the passengers on the titanic were third class. My estimates from the pie graph were close but not 100% accurate. I accurately estimated 25% for first class but I estimated 23% for second class and 52% for third class.

Titanic Project
The purpose of next tasks is to challenge you to examine which percent option [row, column, or
cell] on CODAP is appropriate for your data display!
Task 2 (5 points)
a)
(2 pts) Create a data display in CODAP that shows the survival rate for each class of passengers. Copy and paste the data display you created with the percentages visible in the space below
. Make sure that the percentages you came up with in (b) match with the
percentages in your graph in (a). Your graph with percentages visible:
b)
(3 pts) Using the idea of reference amount, determine the survival rate of each class passengers below. Highlight the class of passengers that had the highest survival rate. 1.
40
% of first-class passengers survived. 2.
24
% of second-class passengers survived.
3.
36
% of third-class passengers survived.
Check your graph and make sure the percentages you came up with in (b) match with the percentages in your graph in (a)! Task 3 (6 points)
a)
(2 pts) Create a data display in CODAP that shows what percent each class is of all survivors. Copy and paste your data display you created with the percentages visible in the space below
.
Your graph with percentages visible:

b)
(2 pts) When creating the data display for part (a) to determine the percent each class is of all survivors, which percent option (row, column, or cell) did you use? Based on this, what is your reference amount?
Your response: I used the row. My reference amount is the amount of people that survived or died per class.
c)
(2 pts) While looking at this data display, some people conclude that third class passengers had a better chance of survival than second class passengers. Why might people make this conclusion? What else should we take into consideration when comparing these percentages? Make a second argument that third class passengers did not
have a better chance of survival. Your response: They may be looking at the wrong side of the data. Third class was actually the majority of the people that did not survive (74%). Task 4 (9 points)
MATH 205 Fall 2023
Titanic Project
Examine the survival rates of adults and children.
a)
(2 pts) Create a data display in CODAP that shows the survival rate for adults versus children. Copy and paste your data display you created with the percentages visible in the space below.
Your graph with percentages visible:
b)
(4 pts) Using the display you created for (a) and the measure tool in CODAP, answer the questions below:
What percentage of adults
survived?
39%
What is your reference amount?
346
What percentage of the survivors were adults
?
81%
What is your reference amount?
346
What percentage of children
survived?
53%
What is your reference amount?
81
What percentage of the survivors were children
?
19%
What is your reference amount?
81
c)
(3 points) When loading people into lifeboats, the rule was supposedly “women and children first.” Based on your analysis from the previous parts of this task, explain how well this rule was followed for children
. Justify your answer with evidence you gathered in parts (a) and (b). (
Note
: You only have to address the rule in regard to children for this question.

MATH 205 Fall 2023
Titanic Project
Make an argument that children were given priority to be rescued using your survival rates from part (b): Out of all the children, more children survived than didn’t. 53% children survived. However, only 39% of adults on the titanic survived.
Make an argument that children were NOT given priority to be rescued using your survival rates from part (b): More adults (346 adults) were saved than children (81 children)
