Informal phonics Inventory On March 7, 2024 I was able to select a student from my host teacher’s classroom for the Informal Phonics Inventory. I chose a student based on the lack he had in the following areas: phonemic awareness, concept of print and syllabication. The student was nervous about the test but I assured the student that it was just a test to show how much they know since being in the kindergarten grade the child felt comfortable. With the help of my host teacher Mrs. Brosius I
was able to administer the phonics P test using the first four pages on 130-133 which focused on phonemic awareness, alphabet recognition and the concept print. With the phonics test it helps provide a convenient means of monitoring a specific skill acquisition. Now according to Stahl,Flanigan,Mckenna,2020. “The P-Test is a phonics assessment that targets a child's ability to make analogies to known words based on familiar rimes.” The P test is a phonics assessment that targets a child’s ability to make analogies to known words based on familiar rimes.” The first set in the student was able to identify all the consonant sounds presented before him. From the digraphs list she had a bit of a challenge where he was only able to recognize twelve words from the twenty presented. The diagraphics which were included in the testing were words which had the following ch, wh, th, and sh. The student recognized most of the frequent rhythms as word chunks. He was able to pronounce most of the pseusedwords as a whole word unit. What was very commendable with the student was that even though he could not pronounce some of the words correctly on page 133 he still tried his best. The consonant sounds serve as the Informal Phonics Inventory’s starting point. I must point out where there was a point in time where the student faced much difficulty in differentiating the letter c which has two sounds (k and s) which have words like “cell” and “call” respectively. The overall completion of the phonics test took thirty-five minutes. That is not uncommon for the test to take that long especially with students that struggle with the phonics. “The Informal Phonics
