1-2 Discussion: Experience of Working With a Creative Leader Hello. My name is Tod and I live near Akron, Oh. I have three very active teenagers, so my interest includes watching my girls play soccer and watching/going to Cleveland Browns games with my son. I work as a Regional Sales Manager for a Danish company that manufactures products going into food production facilities. During my time with my current company, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a leader and a manager. My previous supervisor was a very inspiring leader. He was the poster child of the five practices of exemplary leadership. The main lesson I learned while he was my supervisor was to “Model the Way” (Kouzes and Posner). He led by example because he was in my previous role and new the expectations and challenges. He also would never talk negatively about any situation, and he was regarded as a very upbeat and positive person to be around. This had a positive effect as his leadership made others gravitate toward him. A positive skill that leader demonstrated that I would take into a leadership training program would be the inspiration he showed. He was very in tuned to the short- and long-term goals of his team and company. He was able to break certain situations down from a macro to a micro level for those who needed it. He also would show how our actions and tasks would and could affect our long term success with the company. The ideal leader to work for in todays VUCA environment would be an independent thinker and adaptable to change. I believe the workplace has changed dramatically in the last 20 years. Gone are the days of rigid chronological ordered task and S.O.P’s. Today’s leader needs to be amenable to change to stay competitive in their market/industry. Being adaptable and collaborative would also be beneficial when dealing with the newer workforce and the various types of office settings, particularly the remote positions.
