Discussion Topic: You have been called in to perform an internal audit for the manufacturing department in your company, PG Industries. The new department VP, Laine Finnegan, has expressed concerns that the department is lacking clear goals, so she is unsure how to tell if the work they are doing is contributing to the overall mission of the organization. Finnegan says she would like to understand where the department stands in terms of efficiency of operations, so she is asking for your help in understanding how quickly products are manufactured, what the defect rate is, and if all staff have appropriate training. Using the material from Chapter 14 of the text, select one of Finnegan’s concerns and address the following questions in your response: Describe the steps in a formal control process. What goal would you select to evaluate in this process? What control could you use to measure progress toward the goal? If you realized that performance was not matching expectations, what steps might you take to get things back on track? Be as specific and concrete as possible. The steps in a formal control process are to set performance standards, measure performance, compare performance with the standard and lastly, take action to correct problems and reinforce success. VP Finnegan is facing challenges that are common in the workplace. It is her role to ensure the work completed by this team is contributing to the overall mission of the organization. One major issue VP Finnegan is facing is understanding if all staff have received the appropriate training. It would be in the company’s best interest to ensure each team member is adequately trained to ensure efficiency and quality. The control that would best address the issue of training would be bureaucratic control. VP Finnegan should launch a training portal that houses required training. Based on roles within the organization, employees are assigned training which is completed online in the training portal. This formal control will provide a readily available database of employees who have completed the necessary training. Trends can also be gathered using the database to determine knowledge gaps within the teams. Once it is determined that performance is not meeting expectations, VP Finnegan should focus on principle of exception. Identifying and addressing significant deviations will provide the greatest yield. Training to address the issues should be cascading to all employees. Smaller action plans should be distributed to individual employees during 1-on-1 sessions by their direct leader drive the organization’s mission.
