1.To Influence or Not to Influence? Should Ms. Williams use her knowledge of social influence to encourage teachers to volunteer for the after-school remedial program? What are the specific ethical considerations related to this decision? Yes, Ms.William should use her knowledge of social influence to encourage teachers to volunteer for the after-school remedial program since the remedial programs allow students to not feel bad from falling behind their peers and she has a good experience with remedial programs. I think she should do it as well since this will allow students to not have to be help back. The specific eithical considerations related to this decision are trustworthiness, respect, fairness, caring and good citizenship. Those all need to be taken into consideration when she is trying to influence and encourage teachers to volunteer their time for the after school remedial program. She also has to take into account that the teachers may also have kids and that would be hard for them to stay after school and teach longer. 2.What are the specific ethical considerations relevant to the decision to implement or not implement this strategy? What would you recommend and why? The specific ethical considerations relevant to the decision to implement or not to implement is when she “ would meet with teachers individually to describe the benefits of the program. Then, she would make a very large request (e.g.,   Will you please volunteer to teach in this program without compensation for 4hrs/week for the next 9 months? ). When teachers say, “no”, she would then retreat graciously to the desired request (e.g.,   Okay, I
completely understand. You’re busy and your time is valuable. Would you at least be able to teach in the program for one hour, 1 day/week for the next 3 months? )” this is an example of the Door-in-the face strategy. She needs to see how sometimes it may seem unethical for her to do that since this means that the teachers are not going to be paid. Her making them feel bad if they say no to a smaller suggestion is kind of like manipulation but it is on them if they say yes. 3.What are the specific ethical considerations relevant to the decision to implement or not implement this strategy? What would you recommend and why? She is implanting the foot-in-the door strategy which means she is going to keep asking anyone who already agreed to help and to help more since they already agreed once. The specific ethical considerations relevant to the decisions that she needs to be implement is if people will know that she is taking advantage of her foot being in the door and that she is now just using them. This can cause a lot of problems for her and for the program that she wants to implement. This is an example of a persuasive technique.
