Yopp-Singer Test of Phoneme Segmentation
The Yopp-Singer Test of Phoneme Segmentation is an oral test used to assess children's phonemic awareness and identify those with reading and spelling difficulties. It involves breaking apart a word into its individual sounds and saying each sound in order. The test is administered individually, with no partial credit given. It should be used initially as a screening tool and conducted frequently throughout the year for systematic instruction. An educator can find a lot of information from administering the test. Firstly, the test helps identify the students who may be at risk of having reading gaps. Secondly, the test is an important component of early
literacy development. Lastly, the test can be used to observe the students’ progress over time and plan meaningful learning activities. It is frequently utilized in classrooms instruction in kindergarten and first grade as a component of extensive literacy evaluation programs.

I conducted the Yopp-Singer test on my special needs students. I don’t have access to a 5-
year-old child. I chose this student because I wanted to see where she is in understanding
phonemes and because she is a pre-reader who has intellectual delays and one of her IEP goals is
to read CVC words. I will share her results. The Yopp-Singer Test is a valuable tool for assessing
students’ phonetic abilities and identifying the sounds and areas where the student is struggling.
In the first half of the test my student struggled with the sounds and would say the name of the
letter or would miss the middle sound or add other sounds to the words. After explaining a few
times that I wanted her to say the sound of the letters she heard my student was able to complete
the test. According to my findings my student scored 7/22. This score tells me that my student
has a difficult time listening to the sounds and finding the correct letter to the sound. This score
also tells me that my student has a difficult time hearing the middle sound of the words and
struggles with two letter words such as “do.” Administering this test gave me a lot of insight into
how my student hears some words such as silent “e” words like wave, race, and fine. Since
phonemic awareness, reading achievement, and learning to spell have been linked, to reading
success Yopp and Singer's assessment is particularly useful in identifying areas that require
further teaching or intervention.
