Thesis Statement
For my term paper, I will like to explore and present the impact that the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) when comes to data protection. In today’s world and with the fast-growing technologies, there has been a battle in the network to secure patients’ information. SC Media reported that in 2022 only one of the most notorious medical data breaches was around 30 health plan companies and 4.11 million patients’ information exposed. In the paper, I will explain what is HIPAA, what information is protected by this law, and
what is the relation with the Federal Trade Commission Act. Also, will explore some of the most
notorious court cases concerning HIPAA violations. As soon as will research the cause of data breaches and what technology the government and institutions are using to prevent and protect medical data from being exposed. Furthermore, the paper will examine and explain how newer technologies and medical services provided on the internet make the mission of protecting medical data more difficult. Subtopics outline
