This report is designed to assist
NationaliTeas in becoming a more
sustainable company and to assist in becoming B Corp Certified the listing
below will help this organization to get a head start on this initiative.
Lean Manufacturing
:
The steps suggested could be removed with little
disruption to processing. Step B under farming is (Picked leaves are
weighted and grouped in to 50 lb. bag). Eliminating weighing bags at the
farm will speed up processing and the weight will be dispersed when the
leaves go through processing.
Step A and I under processing should also be eliminated., (Bags of tea are
reweighed at the processing facility and poor-quality leaves are thrown
away). The leaves are weighed in the last step at the farm and do not need
to be weighed again. It is costly to continue to weigh products that will be
oxidized and lose most of its water content before the final process is
complete. In step I there are two previous steps of evaluating the leaves and
throwing away poor-quality leaves and this step should be removed.
The final step to be evaluated for removal is in packaging and shipping step
C (Tea leaves are weighted). The leaves have already been weighed in
processing and again when they enter shipping. It is an unnecessary step to
keep weighing the leaves after they have completed processing multiple
times.
Sustainability
: When evaluating the sustainability of this process there are
several areas that
NationaliTeas could improve upon. One such process is
that when the tea leaves are damaged or in poor quality instead of disposing
of the unused not perfect tea leaves, they could be recycled as fertilizers.
Recycling the leaves would reduce waste for the entity of the company.
Recycling would reduce the cost of disposal and add quality to the nutrient
rich soils the tea leaves are growing in potential creating a better product in
the future.
Process Changes
: The benefit to changing the process that are already in
place for
NationaliTeas would be efficiency. Reducing the time, the
employees handling the tea need to weigh the leaves would benefit the
production line and leave more time for those employees to work on
advancements that will assist the company in becoming more sustainable.
Some of the negative impacts to implementing a recycling compostable
process could be the expense of equipment to unwanted leaves into new
soil to be used in the next planting seasons. New employees need to be
hired and trained in composting and find the most efficient way we can
attain that goal.
Issue Log
: The reported issues that have arisen for the stakeholders
regarding confusion among their level of decision-making power,
involvement, and scheduling of major milestone projects can be addressed
in better communication techniques. Creating opportunities for the
stakeholders to have weekly meetings as to progress and problems would
benefit them and help them to find the direction of roles and
responsibilities needed and show the progress that the company is moving
towards.
The issue of using foil packaging is that it is not environmentally sustained
and is in the wrong direction for
NationaliTeas if they are working toward a
B Coup Certification. However, finding a new package that is sustainable
and has an aesthetic flair would help the company to move in a sustainable
way away from plastic packaging.
The Procurement department wanting to triple the budget to focus on
creating compostable packaging would create a large benefit to
NationaliTeas. This could also assist in disposal of undesirable tea leaves

waste as well. Creation of a report as to what the compostable packaging
materials would cost and the funds needing to be allocated should be
addressed and examined.
The stakeholders would need to evaluate if this
option is cost effective for NationaliTeas and can still create profit.
Operations Management Techniques
:
Two techniques that could benefit
NationaliTeas are project management and learning better manufacture.
The goals of project management are to create an opportunity for things to
be focused, organized, to run smoothly, and safely. Using project
management techniques will create a better product that and be delivered
consistently to the consumers. The other technique that would benefit
NationaliTeas would be to learn manufacturing. Using manufacturing
techniques will increase production and decrease waste. Doing this process
will benefit the bottom-line number in the end.
