Hello Professor and Classmates,

This tweet I found from the Georgia Department of Corrections Twitter page. This tweet talks about a recently opened facility and program that the government deemed essential as a first step in the reform of prisons. The tweet describes how 72 graduates from the Metro Reentry Facility’s 12-month program have finished their studies. This has to do with the social justice concern of how the general public perceives or feels about these offenders. These services “…
address all barriers for participants’ successful reentry back into society” and assist them in becoming more productive members of society (Georgia Department of Corrections, 2018, para. 5, line 2). It is related to the criminal justice system problem of releasing prisoners back into society after their time behind bars. When an offender is released from prison, there is a significant gap between the institutional and free community life (Stojkovic & Lovell, 2019).
The goal of reintegration is one of the functions of the penal system to which this tweet pertains. According to the text, the goal of reintegration is to give prisoners chances following their release from prison, including jobs, access to programs, and support to enable them to lead law abiding lives after their release. All of that is provided to these soon-to-be released prisoners at the Metro Reentry Facility. They also get free legal aid and counseling (Georgia Justice Project, 2019). I believe that when it comes to prison reform, the Georgia Department of Corrections is making a very positive move in the right way by placing a heavy emphasis on the goal of reintegration inside the penitentiary system.
