Reflection on the Newspaper
Every member of the group played a major role in designing the newspaper. First, we
reviewed the entire topic on the USSR and Western world involvement with the Cold War
and supported the idea that "It was the actions and policies of the Soviet Union that led to the
Cold War, not Western aggression.” Having decided this,
Student 1
covered Soviet
Expansionism,
Student 2
dealt with the Berlin Blockade, and
Student 3
handled the Cuban
Missile Crisis.
Student 4
worked on the design and images in the newspaper.
The newspaper focuses on the aggressive steps the Soviet Union took, which might have
resulted in Western aggression. It covers Soviet expansionism whereby Joseph Starling
overthrew governments like Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary and used puppet
communist governments to enlarge the USSR. The newspaper also covers the Berlin
Blockade (1948-1949), when the USSR blockaded all land and water routes leading to
Western Berlin. The US had to intervene and airlift food and supplies to support Berlin's
freedom. It finally covers the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, when the Soviet Union deployed
missiles in Cuba, risking global nuclear war. Images in the newspaper represent the USSR's
actions that caused the Cold War.
History is wide, and covering the history of an event that took years before it could end in a
single infographic medium could be challenging. However, a newspaper can make partial
highlights on a topic to be discussed in later pages. The three-layered layout used in the
gazette creates enough room for each of the three topics discussed and leaves enough room
for images that appeal to the reader.
Although our argument states that the Soviet Union started the Cold War, some argue that
Western aggression might have been the cause. Ref argues that Western nations responded
defensively to Soviet actions. For instance, the Marshall Plan, initiated by the United States
in 1947, provided economic aid to war-torn Europe, which some saw as a threat to Soviet
influence. Above that, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), formed in 1949, was a
defensive military alliance among Western nations. This escalated tensions by countering
Soviet expansion and contributing to the Cold War's onset.
If we were to do the assignment differently, we could have made more sections to write
content and make our information brief than in the first paper. We noticed that there are many
topics that we could have added to support our ideas, like the Truman Doctrine and
Containment of 1947. Still, we covered the most significant points for our discussion and did
our best to make a clear and appealing newspaper.
