I found your article about infectious diseases interesting. I currently work in the Occupational Health department of my organization, and we do the onboarding of each new hire. Every day I run across new employees that need vaccinations for diseases including Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, and Pertussis. During the pandemic, we provided Covid vaccinations, and each year provide Influenza vaccines as well. Many times, new employees will decline vaccinations if they have negative titers for a variety of reasons. As a health care professional, I educate each employee about the diseases and viruses they don’t have immunity to and the effects those diseases or viruses can cause, while acknowledging the individual’s right to decline a vaccine. A recent article I read discussed combining the annual Influenza vaccine with a Covid vaccine to help manage the pandemic. Research revealed while there have several Covid boosters available, public interest for different groups has been low, however those same groups do take an annual Influenza vaccine (Tzenios et al., 2023). The research was a systematic review using studies from November 2020 through November 2022, and revealed combining the Covid booster with the annual flu vaccine can increase the rates of people not interested in the Covid booster alone by over fifty percent (Tzenios et al., 2023). As future providers, educating our patients about the safety and efficacy of vaccines is imperative, while allowing judgement free care. Each patient has the right to choose what is best for them, however providing evidence-based information is imperative for best patient outcomes. Tzenios, N., Tzenios, M. E., & Chahine, M. (2023).
