Case Study 8.1 ACSM’s Resources for the Personal Trainer
This case study is a great way to synthesize the information from Chapter 8. As personal trainers you will meet several people similar to Troy. Learning to ask open-ended questions and demonstrating active listening helps the PT to understand their client and their barriers. Answer the following questions related to the above Case Study:
1.
What questions can you ask Troy to learn more about why he has so much trouble adhering to exercise? (Provide at least 2 questions)
a.
What other forms of exercise would you like to engage in rather than going to the gym? b.
What other obstacles are preventing you from exercising other than your full-time job and social events? 2.
As Troy’s PT what barriers do you think play a role in his inability to adhere to exercise?
a.
Social events directly after work, including drinking
b.
Lack of free time due to full-time job c.
Pressure from mother d.
Not in high school anymore, so he doesn’t play sports or have that strict schedule e.
Detachment from exercising in general 3.
How can you address Troy’s barriers to help improve his adherence?
a.
To address Troy’s social events directly after work, we could plan to decrease how many days he engages in these events after work, for example, instead of everyday we could decrease this to 2-3 days, just so his body and mind could get adjusted. b.
To address Troy’s lack of free time due to his full-time job, we could go through his typical day or a typical week to determine where he could squeeze in exercising and even if there isn’t much time in between, Troy
could incorporate exercising while he is at work, which could include walking during his breaks, or parking his car further away from his job to
get some steps in. c.
To address the pressure from Troy’s mother, Troy could kindly thank his mother for the gift certificate and reassure her that he has noticed his weight gain, and although his schedule is busy, he is trying to find ways around that to incorporate exercising. d.
To address Troy not having a strict schedule like high school or playing sports anymore, we could attempt to make Troy a strict schedule around his work schedule, we could also incorporate playing some sports to bring back his enjoyment. e.
To address Troy’s detachment from the gym or exercising in general, we could find exercises that Troy likes and are more beneficial to him to see
if there is a way we could choose one to start at his home rather than the gym, and then slowly transition him into the gym after he gains to like it again. 4.
Explain why helping Troy change from extrinsic motivation to intrinsic motivation will help.
Helping Troy change from extrinsic motivation to intrinsic motivation will help because if he is doing his actions for the right reason, he will gain more
enjoyment and pride rather than him being pressured into exercising. With him finding his pride in exercising, he will see the positive acquired results and his performance will also become better. With that being said, he would also be less stressed out from the pressure of exercising is his motivation changes to intrinsic. 5.
What strategies can a PT use to increase Troy’s intrinsic motivation?
Some strategies a PT could use to increase Troy’s intrinsic motivation could be to sit down with Troy and listen to his personal goals and how exactly he
wants to grow with his physical activity journey while also giving him
