Hello Osmond, Thank you for your contribution to the Reentry subject this week. Your article was educational and interesting to read. I would like to add to your article a reintegration program that focuses on the inmate's relationship with their family. According to Cullen and Jonson (2016), family support is crucial to the effectiveness of reintegration programs when it comes to incarcerated individuals. Families give help via financial aid, housing, and job placement. Unfortunately, Cullen and Jonson add that many offenders do not routinely connect with family members, and the situation worsens as the inmate's physical distance from his or her family rises.
As a consequence of the difficulties offenders encounter in communicating with their families, programs addressing familial relationships have been the focal point of many reintegration plans.
According to Garofalo (2020), functional family therapy has addressed faulty cognitions, interpersonal skills, and negative emotions in the setting of juvenile justice. As a result, adolescents were more likely to lessen delinquent and violent conduct. Garofalo contends further
that multimodal family therapy has been demonstrated to be effective in the Reentry process of juveniles by addressing issues of delinquency as well as substance and alcohol misuse. Garofalo further mentions that although if there is a lack of available empirical evidence about the efficacy
of family therapy with adult offenders, he believes that it is still beneficial. There are many programs, such as cognitive-behavioral family therapy (CBFT), which has been found to improve relationships within the family by helping those who suffer from depression, anxiety, aggression, and substance abuse. This is accomplished by providing assistance to those who are afflicted with these mental health conditions.
According to Garofalo (2020), pair therapy is another another evidence-based treatment that has been shown to be effective. Garofalo maintains that couples who take part in this intervention have a better knowledge of one another and, as a consequence, develop more sympathetic attitudes toward their spouses. He says this is the case because the participants learn more about each other.
The parable of the Prodigal Son, which may be found in Luke chapter 15 of the New International Version (2011), brings to mind certain thoughts. Even though the younger son took his inheritance, left his father's estate, and indulged in what the world had to offer when he returned home, the father was not angry; rather, he was filled with joy that his lost son was found. Even though the younger son took his inheritance, left his father's estate, and indulged in what the world had to offer when he returned home, the father was not angry. On the other hand, his brother was not in a very good mood and, as one would expect, took issue with some of the activities of his brother while also being mystified by the conduct of their father. This story brings to mind the support that the family provides, which is what ultimately enables the lost son to be redeemed. Imagine for a moment if the father fired the son, ordered him to leave, or treated him like one of his slaves. It is possible that the son would leave and return to his previous way of life if the father did any of these things. This is true for ex-convicts who eventually rejoin society after serving their sentences. The inmate's own family is the most reliable and helpful source of support that they may have.
