Student Descriptions
Impairment-Driven Description:
Sammy is a 6th-grade student who reads at a 3rd-grade level.
Sammy is troubled with ADD and has a 30% reduction in his hearing. This makes it difficult for
Sammy to keep his attention on certain tasks and it makes it harder for him to hear in the
classroom.
Strengths-Driven Description:
Sammy loves team sports and is dedicated to football and
basketball. Sammy is also very good with computers and video games, and this allows his
attention to be focused on a particular object.
Analysis of Descriptions:
Going by the impairment-driven description, sitting Sammy near the
teacher would allow Sammy to reach his full potential. Sitting at the front of the classroom,
Sammy would be able to hear and interact with the teacher compared to if he was sitting in the
back of the room. One of Sammy's impairments is that he has ADD so keeping him on task and
making sure he is focused is optimal for his growth as a student learner. Gowing by the strength-
driven description, I believe that Sammy would be great in group projects, and allowing him to
work on a computer when possible, might give him the advantage he needs to be successful.
Sammy is good with computers and video games so including activities like accessible on
Kahoot might help him grow in his understanding of the subject at hand. Allowing Sammy to use
what he is good at to his advantage might be a factor in controlling his ADD and could keep him
from getting off task.
