Patients undergoing ulcer therapy should avoid cigarette smoking, this decreases the effectiveness of the medicine in healing the ulcer.
Do not take the medication within 2 hours of any other drug
Patients should know that they must take the medication on a regular basis, if the patient stops the medication abruptly, can lead to a rebound of hypersecretion of gastric acids. Patients should have an understanding that structuring their environment to reduce stress factors and decrease tensions will help to facilitate the healing process of ulcer.

One bulk-forming laxative is psyllium, a general dose for this medication is powered and the patient should take 1-3 tsp or 2-6 caps and dissolve it in a full glass of fluid one to three times per day.
One stool softener is docusate this medication comes in oral capsules, tablets, and liquid form, and 50-300mg should be taken daily.
One stimulant laxative is senna, this medication comes in 8.6mg tablets, and patients should take 1-4 tablets 2 times daily. Patients may also get this medication in 10-15 mL syrup, if the patient is taking the syrup, it should be taken 2 times a day.

A 43-year-old male patient calls the physician’s office due to persistent diarrhea for the past 24 hours. The doctor instructs you to recommend that the patient take Pepto-Bismol, following the dosage on the medication label. Answer the following questions regarding this scenario:

Which medications should the patient be cautious with when taking Pepto-

If the patient is taken warfarin, Aspirin methotrexate, or Quinolones and tetracyclines they should use caution when taking Pepto-bismol.

Which side effects should he be aware of? (1 pt)
Transient, occasional constipation, discoloration of tongue and stool becoming black in color as well as ringing in the ear are all side effects of Pepto-Bismol
c.
What dietary recommendations should the patient follow while taking Pepto-
Bismol? (1 pt) When a patient is taking Pepto-Bismol, they should follow a bland diet and
avoid food that contains natural pectin.
d.
What is the maximal amount of time the patient should take Pepto-Bismol? (1 pt)
The maximum amount of time a patient should self- medicate with Pepto-Bismol is 48 hours.
