2 Brochure Review The brochure under review is titled Speak Up Against Discrimination. It was published in 2021 as a component of the "Speak Up" campaign by the Joint Commission. Patients are urged by the pamphlet to report any instances of discrimination they may experience in medical settings. It specifically targets patients who are facing health barriers as a result of financial hardship, age, gender identity, location, language barrier, race/ethnicity, lack of resources, mental or physical (in)abilities, culture, religion, sexual orientation, and economic status (The Joint Commission, 2021). Given that racial discrimination is the most common type of prejudice in healthcare institutions, it gives greater attention to it. Summary of Brochure This brochure first highlights the mission and vision of the Joint Commission. The Joint Commission aims to aid accredited organizations in providing safe and high-quality healthcare for everyone (The Joint Commission, 2021). However, the brochure also points out that discriminatory practices like racism work to defeat this aim and can harm patients’ health. The Joint Commission lays down standards to guide healthcare organizations in order to ensure that discriminatory practices are not tolerated. However, the Commission acknowledges that systemic bias and racism still exist in healthcare and that discrimination can occur due to the factors listed in the introduction (race, age, sexual orientation, etc.) Patient Communication The brochure outlines patients’ rights, including the right to be treated with respect, not to be discriminated against, and to have an interpreter. It also provides avenues for redress should a patient feel they are being discriminated against. This is in the form of communication channels where patients can report these incidents of discrimination. The first avenue is reporting to the healthcare organization’s patient advocacy department. Should this
3 not bear fruit, the patient can then file a complaint with the Office for Civil Rights. If the patient’s issue remains unresolved, then they can report it directly to the Joint Commission, provided the Commission accredited the healthcare organization. Personal Reflection I selected this topic of discrimination because it is rampant in healthcare organizations, and most people have normalized it, which is not right. I have been a victim of discrimination in the past, specifically because of my religion and economic status. I am passionate about ending all forms of discrimination and an avid advocate for a discrimination-free healthcare system. Healthcare organizations are the one place where people should be treated equally because healthcare issues affect everyone indiscriminately. Evaluation of Brochure i. The information provided in the brochure is significantly beneficial, as it offers vital knowledge on the various types of information and patients’ rights and how to deal with instances of discrimination. I can incorporate it into patient education by empowering patients to actively participate in their healthcare, fostering a more equitable and inclusive healthcare environment. ii. The brochure meticulously describes the various forms of discrimination that patients may face. However, the patient rights outlined are not exhaustive and should include other rights like the right to informed consent and the right to file complaints. iii. The information presented in the brochure was clear and easy to understand. The language is straightforward and does not require anyone to have a deeper knowledge of the facts to comprehend the message. The information is also presented in bullets, making it easy to read and grasp the different points being made.
