You are in charge of ship-scheduling for a large trans-oceanic shipping firm that handles upwards of 100 cargo ships weekly between N. America and many European ports. FIRST: assume that tomorrow the Gulf Stream turns off. You have 600 ship-trips in scheduling, and 150 ships at sea at the moment you find out. What will be your biggest problem in adjusting your business to the new oceanic conditions, and why? The Gulf Stream is one of many ocean currents. A warm water current in the Atlantic Ocean which greatly affects the climate of North America and Europe and has played an important role in routes used by ships. So if the Gulf Stream turns off, one major concern would be the amount of fuel it would take for commercial cargo ships to utilize for their journey. Considering this would happen there is really no viable alternative since nuclear power vessels are not likely to be extended to commercial vessels for security reasons. One would have to make and important decision in whether the cost of high-sulphur marine fuel is cheaper to use than marine diesel oil. However, a shift to diesel will face strict confrontation, from the shipping community, who argue that the additional refining processes required to upgrade the surplus residual fuel to diesel would cause nearly as much pollution as burning it in ships. It a catch Twenty Two and to be quite clear nobody wins. Perhaps, the cargo ships may have to charge more for their open sea transportations of goods to pay for the extra fuel it would cost to transport to various nations due to the Gulf Stream shutting off. My first priority is to deliver the 150 ships that needed to be re-routed if the Gulf Stream is turned off. Charting new courses can be strenuous but it could be done with expertise knowledge and diligence. Additionally, the other 600 ships would have to be re-routed but more importantly the price of the cargo shipping would have to rise to accommodate for the added cost of fuel. Many delivery dates would have to be modified as I am sure the dates that were scheduled prior to the Gulf Stream shutting off are no longer valid. Conversely, every effort would be attempted to deliver all goods that have perishable items (FOOD) first. Additionally, this step could help eliminate the increase of rodent infestation that could possibly happen, due to the decomposing food in the cargo containers. SECOND - Assume instead that the turn-off has not yet happened, but that your boss takes the possibility very seriously. What contingency plans should you develop “just in case?” The first thing to do is a thorough Risk Assessment. This process will determine if it is necessary to execute your Contingency Plan and if the dangers outweigh the risk. Understanding what services are available and what options will work best in a particular situation can make the difference between success and failure. A Contingency Plan is a vital plan when your business is facing corporate interruptions, costing you millions of dollars and reputation. The first option is to decide find some type of storage facility if all the cargo ships have full payloads. Specifically, decide what to do with cargo that is transferring perishable foods that may expire before they are delivered.
Secondly, you may have to reroute ships with new expected delivery dates or pick up date. Alternatively you should probably try to contract out other commercial vessels to deliver or pick up your goods if your company is overloaded with expected delivery dates. It may be vital to determine whether your carrier can properly handle the increased complexity of international shipments. For instance, make sure that the carrier has solid customs clearance procedures in place and can assist you in filling out the necessary paperwork. There are also commodity restrictions and prohibitions associated with international shipments that you'll need to work through in advance. Finally, consider an air charter, albeit more expensive it may be much cheaper that purchasing 2 million dollars in diesel fuel for a fleet of ships. In this case, one of the most important questions is how well the aircraft is matched to the job. Are you getting (and paying for) the right aircraft, or just what happens to be available? Charters vary widely in cost, based on the size and speed of the aircraft as well as the distance traveled. Do nuclear ships care about the current? I do not see a reason why they would since they power supply is in the upward of 20 years untl the core has be changes they could take the longest route around the world and still have fuel left over for many more years. However, I would imagine that the Captain of the ship would take the best rout possible that would be advantageous to his ship and the current. Do you think we'll start seeing civilian nuclear-powered cargo ships? Never, there is no way in my humble opinion that the Governments of the world want thousands of vessels sailing the world, particularly off the Ivory Coast with either low-enriched Uranium or Highly enriched uranium "burnable poison". It not even a good idea to even discuss the though of doing it. Additionally, there are many treaties in place the specifically restrict nuclear vessels from porting on their location. Even if this was to happen, there would have to be many modified treaties to be made by many countries that have no relationship with one another. "The great river within the ocean." Here is a river in the ocean.” wrote Maury, “In the severest droughts it never fails, and in the mightiest floods it never overflows. Its banks and its bottoms are of cold water, while its currents are warm. The Gulf of Mexico is its fountain and its mouth is in the Arctic Seas. It is the Gulf Stream. There is in the world no other such majestic flow of waters. Its current is more rapid than the Mississippi. Matthew Fontaine Maury
