II. Short Essay (12 points each) – Answer the two questions below in essay format (no bullets). Use no more than three paragraphs for each response.
1.
Solutions
. Two major points of emphasis for this course are solutions to environmental problems and how environmental problems differ across places & populations. Across the contemporary issues of this unit (solid & hazardous waste, environmental health & disease, water pollution, air pollution)
, choose two of these issues. For each, describe
a national-
scale
policy or technological solution and how it helps address the issue (
4 points
). Then for
each of your two issues, describe
an individual or household-scale
solution and how it helps solve the issue (
4 points
). Among your four solutions, explain
which one you think is the most equitable across places or populations, and which one is the least. (
4 points
)
Water pollution and air pollution have many solutions to help address these issues. They both have government laws in place to protect the quality of our water and air. Starting with water pollution, the Clean Water Act is a federal law in place that helps regulate water pollution within the United States. It was created in 1972 to restore and maintain the physical, chemical, and biological means of the country's water sources. For air pollution, we have the Clean Air Act. It is another federal law that was created in 1963. This was made to improve air quality and
regulate emissions. These may be from industries or transportation methods. On an individual scale for water pollution, there are many things we can do. Reduce our usage of single-use plastics, these may end up in waterways. Properly dispose of hazardous materials, avoid pouring chemicals down the drain or toilet, and support organizations. There are many more that we can do it just need the time and effort. For air pollution, many of these solutions go hand in hand some others that can more specifically focus on this include water and how much transportation we use. If possible switch to walking or riding a bike. Avoid burning wood or trash, support clean energy sources, reduce your energy at home, etc. I believe that the solutions that will work the best come from individuals taking action. We have a significant amount on the environment. Just by making small changes, such as implementing the action above, we can protect the environment and conserve natural resources. By all working together, individuals, the government, and businesses we may all find solutions that are realistic so that we can all balance economic growth. 1

Linking
. The contemporary environmental issues of environmental health, air pollution, and
solid waste pollution are not mutually exclusive, but rather have linkages among them. First,
describe which of the three issues you think represents the most dangerous threat to humans, and why (
3 points
). Then, for each of the three contemporary issues
, choose one
key aspect pertaining to it. For example, persistence is as an aspect of environmental health. Proceed to describe its relationship (e.g., cause & effect) with a key aspect of each of the other two issues (
3 points for each relationship pair
). The aspects you choose should
differ from what you profiled in short essay question 1. I believe that example one is the most dangerous to humans. I chose this because, unlike the other two examples, this one shows it all going in a continuous circle. While the other two just have a main source point to the two. In example one is a circle of effects it is hard to say how this could stop because they are all affecting each other and have direct contact with each other. For environmental health, an aspect that pertains to these is disease spread. This relates to my aspect of air pollution, which is harming human health, both of these things together make the living conditions for humans very difficult which can lead to an increase in the death rate. This leads to solid and hazardous waste, which is public health. This is another danger to humans living in harsh conditions. This then goes back to disease spreading. All of these tie into the harsh conditions that humans may face to live in.
I’ve provided examples below to help you visualize what I mean by relationships among aspects. The direction of each arrow signifies cause to effect, while thicker arrows indicate stronger relationships. To be clear, you’re not expected to sketch any relationships for this essay question, just describe them. There can be many other configurations than these examples that apply to your selected aspects, so don’t confine yourself to what I’ve shown.
