Explain the importance of operational managers being able to understand how financial statements are prepared. How can operational managers at the Forge Group use the financial information presented in the case study to manage their respective divisions effectively? U5D1P1 Hi everyone, This week we are discussing the importance of understanding financial statements. The essence of understanding financial statements allows an operational manager the ability to make informed decisions on managing the budget effectively while contributing to the overall success of the organization. It allows the manager the ability for long-term planning, to help motivate their teams, to relocate resources as needed to improve workflows (Borad, 2022). For any organization, the financial statements are a comprehensive snapshot of the company’s financial health. As a manager, it is vital to understand the overall performance. When it comes to why it is important, managers must make decisions, when armed with the correct information, they are able to relocate resources wisely which can help in understanding revenue trends, expenses or increase workflows. Operational managers often must be able to manage or create a budget. The financial statements are what guides the managers in keeping track and setting realistic targets for those budgets. When discussing ways that the financial statements can be utilized, there are a few that come to mind. The first being a performance evaluation, based off the balance sheet, the company can have a better understanding of their liabilities and assets allowing managers to evaluate the financial positions of each division. The income statement allows the company to analyze the expenses, revenue, and even the net income which can help identify areas needed for improvement. Another utilization for the financial statement is in the form of resource allocation. The cash flow statement allows the organization to see what is coming in and out which can help them fund specific areas to make them efficient. It also allows them to look at where the most money is being spent and can flex the budget to be more accurate. References: Borad, S. B. (2022, May 4).
