Grade level/appropriateness
Giraffes can’t dance is a great pre-text for dramatic exploration and role-play within Grade 2 classrooms. The cohort is working at a level consistent with the grade 2 drama content descriptions outlined within the Australian Curriculum: The Arts (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, 2016). “Dramatic activity is already a natural part of most children’s live before they start school” (Farmer, 2011, p.1). Research has shown that through the use of play and make-believe, students are able to make sense of their own identity, through the exploration of fictional situations and role, which have parallels to the real world (Farmer, 2011). In an educational context, Drama is a journey of inquiry and art, which, according to ACARA (2016), enables the “expression and exploration of personal, cultural and social worlds” (p.45).
