Alyson Westfall Activity A. Instructional Activity The grade level would be a 10 th grade American Literature, secondary English. The lesson would be a figurative speech worksheet about the poem “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe. The instructional actively would start with direct instruct by me. This would include the directions to the worksheet and include any questions students may have before they get start. I would follow this up by putting students into groups of 3. This would foster an environment of social enrichment and critical thinking in group setting. Each student would mark on their own worksheet, but would have to discuss each question and highlight the information in the text. I would walk the class and check on each group to clear up any questions and listen to their discussion. At the end of class, I would ask the students for observations about the text and figurative speech. What they found and discussed in their groups. B. Motivation and Engagement Strategies I would motivate students to complete the assignment by providing points for every student that completed the assignment. If the students were willing to share their answers with the class than their group would receive an extra credit point to be placed on the quiz of their choice. C. I would engage students by requiring them to complete active thinking in the assignment. This would be done by asking each group questions about their answers and the text
themselves. “Active learning methods ask students to engage in their learning by thinking, discussing, investigating, and creating. In class, students practice skills, solve problems, struggle with complex questions, make decisions, propose solutions, and explain ideas in their own words through writing and discussion.” ( Freeman et al., 2014) I will also collect all papers and check answers to ensure all students are understanding the information.
