English Composition: Drafting Worksheet *Five points each unless listed* 1. Which topic from the assignment sheet have you chosen? Identify the topic and your general take on it. What do you think of the topic and what do you think you might do with it? (If you are writing on musical performance, you cannot simply consider the lyrics of the songs—you want to consider the representation of the performance in narrative context). (2 points) 1) I have chosen the first topic, which talks about the loop that the movie is in. I found this topic most interesting because it was one of the very first things I noticed about the movie when watching it. With the topic I think I will have a grand time explaining my thoughts on why the character is going through such a loop and how this music he is playing helps to support the cause of the looping movie. 2. Explain how and where the topic you’ve chosen shows up in the text. Identify specific scenes that are key to your topic. What question(s) or problem(s) related to this topic show up in each scene? (3 points) 1) The main reason I noticed this topic is because the movie ends the same way it begins. We see Llewyn exit a bar after performing head towards an alley where he is met with a person this other character beats him up and movie moves on from there, but this same situation happens again at the end of the movie giving the impression that it is in a time loop. This starts to bring up questions like is just certain parts of the movie a loop, is it the whole movie, why is the movie a time loop.

Select one of those specific sequences or scenes that you plan to discuss from the film, then focus some detailed notetaking on these pages. Provide ten (10) details or observations about the selection that are relevant to your chosen topic. Summary is not allowed; you will get no credit for noting “what happens” or copying dialogue. What do you see and hear? Look at this as practice for focusing on how the story is told rather than what happens. 1) The film begins with Llewyn finishing a performance at the Gaslight Cafe in Greenwich Village and getting beaten up in the alley. The film ends with him in the same place, having the same encounter, creating a sense of déjà vu. 2) Throughout the film, Llewyn performs the same songs in different venues. 3) Llewyn finds himself caring for a cat that doesn't belong to him. The cat becomes a recurring theme, and it symbolizes the repetitive nature of his life. He loses the cat and then finds it again, mirroring the looping nature of his journey. 4) The film is set during a particularly harsh winter, which adds to the sense of repetition. The weather itself becomes a symbol of the unchanging and unforgiving nature of Llewyn's circumstances. 5) Llewyn's interactions with other characters also seem to follow a pattern. He argues with Jean and Jim, two fellow musicians, and has strained relationships with multiple people in his life, suggesting that these conflicts are recurrent. 6) Llewyn misses multiple opportunities for success in the film, and he often finds himself back at square one. This inability to progress or escape his current situation reinforces the idea of a repetitive cycle. 7) Llewyn faces rejection at various points in the film, including from the record label executives and the solo act
English Composition: Drafting Worksheet *Five points each unless listed* that he auditions for. These rejections mirror similar situations he has faced before, emphasizing the looping of his struggles in the music industry. 8) Throughout the film, Llewyn embarks on a physical journey to find success and stability. However, he always seems to end up back where he started, both geographically and metaphorically. 9) The film takes place over the course of a week, but it feels like a continuous loop where each day seems to blend into the next. There's a sense of déjà vu, as if Llewyn is reliving the same week repeatedly. 10) He keeps performing at the Gaslight Cafe, facing the same audience, and experiencing similar setbacks. 4. List two quotations you will use from Jonathan Romney’s article: 1) “Llewyn also has a weight of sorrow to bear. His former singing partner committed suicide, his elderly father is in a care home, and his old girlfriend moved back to Akron following an abor- tion, or so Llewyn thinks. A former merchant seaman ready to ship out again if all else fails, Llewyn has simply engaged with life more than anyone else around him.” 2) “But in life, we don't come home as neatly, or as unscathed, as animals in Disney movies. Davis still has a price to pay, in the form of his beating—and who knows, perhaps it'll be the making of him. As his assailant makes his exit, a bartered Llewyn salutes his departing cab with another "Faretheewell"—a wry, muttered au revoir.”

English Composition: Drafting Worksheet *Five points each unless listed* 5. List two eligible sources that you’ve found through your library research: 1) A Circle in a Spiral 2) No Direction Home 6. Which of those sources do you plan to use? And which quotations from that source? 1) I plan to use “A Circle in a Spiral” for sure but I may find myself using a little bit from each article. The quotes I want to use are… i. “It begins, moves forward, before looping back around into itself. Its beginning is its end, and its end is its beginning. Even a road trip – that straightest of narratives – is circular: a round trip there and back; a circle within a circle.” ii. “Like a vinyl record on the turn- table, it spins round and round, seemingly travelling somewhere yet going nowhere. It plays like an album because the film is full of songs: songs that – like those best tunes, on the best LPs – grow more profound with each play, that suffer not from repeti- tion, that only add meaning with subsequent spins.” iii. “The open road – so long a place of American cinematic fantasy – is dark, grim, unforgiving; when Llewyn drives past a signpost to Akron, where the mother of the child he never knew about returned to raise them, it’s a stark symbol of another life, perhaps a better one.” 7. In one or two sentences, introduce the primary source (the film) and the broad topic of your essay. You might do this by establishing the premise of the film in a way that leads to the identification of your chosen topic. Include the name of the title (italicized in MLA) and the author. 1) The film Inside Llewyn Davis is a moving piece that shows the true troubles artists face in the music industry. Film
English Composition: Drafting Worksheet *Five points each unless listed* creators Joel and Ethan Coen do a fantastic job of showing this by putting the movie in a sort of “loop”. 8. Considering the topic, you are planning to write about, what issue(s), problem(s), or question(s) does the film raise? How and where have these issues developed? Think of this issue or question as anticipating the content topic of body paragraphs . (3 points) 1) I am planning to write about the topic on the loop that is the film Inside Llewyn Davis. I want to talk about the pain that artists go through to get to the “top” and how some artists might be going through this is something that people on the outside can see. I want to address the issue that all artists live a big fancy life. I also want to connect that somehow to why the film is moving in a constant loop and how that brings importance to the matter. 9. Thesis brainstorm: Part one: What issue is raised by your topic? The looping structure of the movie, where Llewyn's journey seems to be repeated, suggests that he is stuck in a never- ending cycle of failure and frustration. This looping structure raises questions about the futility of Llewyn's efforts and the harsh realities of pursuing a career in the arts. The looping structure in "Inside Llewyn Davis" is a writing device that sneaks the central themes of the film, including the struggle and the harsh realities of pursuing a creative career.
English Composition: Drafting Worksheet *Five points each unless listed* Part two: As a result, what defined meaning or reflection upon the world does this exploration produce? The movie has a repeating form, and Llewyn seems to be stuck in a loop of repeating mistakes and circumstances. This can be seen as a commentary on the repeating nature of life, where people often find themselves in similar situations, making similar choices, and struggling to break free from patterns.
