Advocacy Project Outline Assignment Sheet
The outline for this project is going to look different for each of you because you’re doing something different. Use the questions below to help you outline and arrange your
ideas.
Proposal
1.
How are you going to introduce the information?
The best way to introduce the information is to get the person invested. To do this, I will choose to present a scenario that tempts that person. For instance, I might start off by asking them how the looming economic crisis had affected them in some way. Then, having them envision a scenario in which they no longer can afford basic necessities anymore because of a situation that was out of their reach, such as the current gasoline prices.
In doing this, I have hooked the reader, that way it would be easier for me to reel them in and present my claim that displacement as a result of urban renewal and gentrification gives those affected no choice.
2.
What is the most important background information/context the audience needs to know to make their decision to help you? List out at least 3 things.
They should be aware of the current state of the economy.
They should be aware that everyone is affected by the economy.
They should be aware that not everyone can afford to pay rent or buy
a home.
3.
Why is the problem important? Give your audience at least 2 reasons why they should care?
The displacement of whole communities would leave many homeless. ENG 102 Writing Project #3: Advocacy Proposal
The homeless are more prone to becoming sick/infected, not only affecting them but also having the possibility to spread the infection.
If businesses can take these communities with ease, your home and families are next in line.
4.
Summarize the sources you used and the most crucial information from the Problem Analysis paper.
Curtis Choy emphasizes how urban renewal not only displaces many
low-income tenants that depend on them but also leaves them feeling isolated, especially the elders.
Elvin Wyly/Kathe Newman/Alex Shafran/Elizabeth Lee demonstrates how contemporary gentrification is, especially in New York.
Chuo Li further denotes how these ethnic enclaves provide immigrants with a sense of belonging and a feeling of social security
in a world of violence and prejudice.
Samira Kawash reveals the double standard society holds against a growing movement versus a movement without much momentum.
Robinson Davida L./Rhodes Dasha J./Van Sluytman Laurens reminds
us that we as people can be quick to mislabel the homeless as addicts and alcoholics, but, they are just people who were simply hapless.
Kfir Mordechay and Jennifer B. Ayscue remind us that race had always been an issue in America. Furthermore, gentrification does not have to be bad when it is inclusive. Overall, urban renewal/revitalization and gentrification pose a great risk to these communities when they are for profit. Government projects and big businesses that seek to supersede these low-income communities are essentially wiping them out. Only by invoking the public to take notice and action through a petition or letter to enforce a new law that prevents the further urban renewal/revitalization or gentrification of low-income communities will they be able to thrive and prosper.

5.
How will you conclude your proposal? What is your call to action?
Ultimately, my goal is very straightforward; persuade the people to accept that this is a real problem that needs attention. My call to action would be to invoke a petition or for lawmakers to take a direct stance against urban renewal/revitalization and gentrification by imposing a new law.
Reflection Paper
1.
Why did you choose the format you chose? What makes that format most effective for your intended audience?
I chose to make a “website” as I feel it is the best way to get the message out there because online sources are easily accessible by the younger generation of adults. Even if I fail to capture my intended audience, my message will still be there for many years to come. 2.
How did you prioritize the order you arranged the information? Why did you prioritize it that way?
No one visits a website to read everything on it. Knowing this, I have decided on keeping a clean and straightforward explanation for each of the pages on my “website” to ensure that all the important pieces of information are picked up by the reader. However, I will have it so that if the
reader wants to know more, they will have to navigate further into the website. With each page, I will introduce my sources and their claims. Rather than taking on the usual website layout where the reader mindlessly scrolls through the page
until they reach the very bottom, there will be tabs that allow them to further explore the motives, statistics, and people mentioned for this “website”. 3.
How realistic is your solution? Have you accounted for time and resource restrictions you might face?
I would say my proposed solution is most realistic with the end of the semester nearing and finals week coming up. Additionally, having made a few slideshows in the past, I should be able to manage a quality product within the next few weeks. ENG 102 Writing Project #3: Advocacy Proposal

4.
Have you accounted for counter proposals and alternate solutions? Have you shown how your solution is the best one?
Counter proposals and alternative solutions will be addressed on one of the pages of my website. Following those proposals and solutions will be a
few rebuttals slowly leading up to my proposed solution.
