Each week, you will have an opportunity to practice different aspects of the writing process in a writing notebook. It consists of a template you will fill out and submit in Canvas. In addition to introducing and practicing targeted components of the writing process, these notebooks are meant to help you to determine your own strengths and to identify opportunities for growth. This week, the writing notebook focuses on cultural competence in the workplace and how it reconnects to your communication to ensure that you choose the best rhetorical style for your purpose and target audience.
STEP ONE: Cultural Competence and its Importance Cultural competence is an individual’s ability to interact with and respect other people who are culturally different in a cross-cultural setting. Review the Cultural Competence Resource
resource. 1.
Based on the definition of cultural competence, explain why it is important to be culturally
competent as an employee in your field?
It is important with my field because its working in a school system, in school systems its various amounts of different races and its always good to include things from other races into lessons and activities. Then it helps with students to learn things outside of their culture and build bonds with different people.
STEP TWO: Cultural Competence as a Workplace Skill The workplace is a diverse setting, as employees come from various backgrounds and present varying perspectives. Thus, it is important to adapt to, respect, tolerate, and understand unique individuals to effectively collaborate and communicate with different people from different backgrounds.
1.
Discuss two strategies you can use to ensure respect and tolerance for diverse individuals who are different from yourself in the workplace.
Treat them just like you would want yourself to be treated, and take the time to learn who they are instead of judging.

STEP THREE: Cultural Competence in Workplace Communication Now, you can combine the work you have done so far to illustrate how cultural competency skills help influence the rhetorical style used in workplace writing. Communication is a two-way process that requires building a rapport with individuals from different cultures, avoiding assumptions, and communicating the intended message concisely and clearly using verbal and non-verbal language. Activity 1
:
Review the Non-Verbal Communication Across Cultures
.
1.
Analyze two non-verbal communication strategies, such as tone of voice, facial expressions, personal space, words, and posture, that enhance professionalism and teamwork in a cross-cultural setting.
These thing take into account of a lot of things you do when talking to someone.
2.
Analyze two written communication strategies that enhance professionalism and emphasize the intended message in a cross-cultural setting.
Enter your response in the space provided.
STEP FOUR: Review and Reflect
Review your work in this Writing Notebook. What challenges did you encounter? Which aspects of cultural competence were new to you, or which aspects might you have already been familiar with? In no more than 150 words, please reflect on your work in this activity.
I didn’t encounter any challenges, I just learned more in-depth how important cultural competence and non-verbal communication is. Of course, I knew that the different parts
of your body language have a huge impact on how the person you are talking to feels about the conversation. Then with cultural communication, I knew how important it is to never treat anyone different because of their culture just take the time to learn who they are.
