Assignment 7-2: Final Tiered Lesson Plan Directions Teacher’s Name: Chardeni Shelton Title of Lesson: Understanding Expository Text Standards: ELA.2. R.2.1 Explain how text features—including titles, headings, captions, maps, and/or illustrations—contribute to the meaning of texts. ELA.2. V.1.3 Identify and use context clues, word relationships, reference materials, and/or background knowledge to determine the meaning of unknown words. Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to understand expository text features. Students will be able to use context clues in the text to identify and explain how titles, headings, captions, maps, and/ or illustrations work together to answer questions regarding expository texts. Whole Class Activities 1) The teacher will present an anchor chart on text features with the class and the class will participate to recognize where the titles, headings, captions and illustrations are in expository texts. (Teacher will provide pictures for ELL learners) 2) Read guided reading text “Baby Bears” in their Reading/Writing Companion Books together as a class. (Teacher will provide audio for “Baby Bears” Text) 3) The teacher will use scaffolded questions to help the students understand and determine the expository text features in “Baby Bears”. Assessments 1) Correctly identify the titles, headings, captions and illustrations in expository text on an anchor chart presented and guided by teacher.
2) Use context clues and background knowledge to determine the meanings of words the students do not know or understand. 3) Correctly determine expository text features in “Baby Bears” (Teacher will provide guidance for ELL learners to determine expository text features) Level 3 Activities 1) Read grade level Literature Anthology text “Eagles and Eaglets”. Annotate marginal texts for hints of text features; headings, captions, maps, and/ or illustrations. (ELL students will listen to “Eagles and Eaglets” text) 2) Answer in text questions on about expository text for the grade level text. Assessments 1) Use context clues and background knowledge to determine the meanings of words the students do not know or understand. Correctly answer marginal in text questions using teachers' guidance/ assistance. 2) Correctly answer high order thinking questions related to numerous expository text features to help the students understand the grade level text. Level 2 Activities 1) Read grade level Literature Anthology text “Eagles and Eaglets”. Annotate marginal texts for hints of text features; headings, captions, maps, and/ or illustrations. (ELL students will listen to “Eagles and Eaglets” text) 2) Answer in text questions on about expository texts features (titles and headings) to determine the topic for the grade level text. Assessments

Correctly answer marginal in text questions using teachers' guidance/ assistance. 2) Correctly answer high order thinking questions related to (titles and headings) to help the students understand the topic for the grade level text. (ELL learners will get scaffolded guided questions from the teacher) Level 1 Activities 1) Read lower grade level Literature Anthology text “Eagles and Eaglets”. Annotate marginal texts for hints of text features; headings, captions, maps, and/ or illustrations. (ELL students will listen to “Eagles and Eaglets” text) 2) Answer in-text questions about expository text in small groups with assistance from the teacher. Assessments 1) Use context clues and background knowledge in small group instruction with teachers prompting and guidance to determine meanings of words and expository texts to read lower grade level text. 2) Correctly answer in text questions with prompting, scaffolding and guidance from teacher to understand grade level text. Whole Class Activities 1) Students will work in teams to create a diagram on animals assigned by the teacher using context clues to label text features to identify and understand expository text. The teacher will work and guide Tier 1 students on facts and text features that will go on the diagram. 2) Students will explain (verbally) some vocabulary context clues they used to help them understand the gravel level texts they have read. Assessments 1) Students will work together collaboratively to accurately create a diagram on animals, using context clues to identify and understand expository text.
