A.  In the scenario given in task two, the student has two major concerns that are a source of distress. The first occurrence was the failure of the Objective Assessment, which the student believes is due to the proctor asking the student to re-arrange the testing area to meet requirements. This was time-consuming and a source of anxiety. To help resolve this issue, the student can access WGU’s Student Handbook. Within the handbook, there are specific guidelines that can be followed before taking an OA to help ensure success. In the handbook, under section IV, the student will find information on the university's policies for their online proctored exams. For an exam, a student's test-taking area must be fully visible and the room itself must be secure. Reading through the policy, beginning at number 18, the student would find solutions to the issues that occurred and better prepare for the retake (Western Governors University, 2023b). The second occurrence dealt with a failed Performance Assessment and the frustration that arose after the student was informed that they needed to meet with their course instructor before resubmitting their research paper. While some sort of frustration might be unavoidable, the complete surprise that the student was feeling could have been avoided had they read the student handbook. Under section V of the student handbook, it is made clear that it is normal procedure for a student to be required to meet with their course instructor (Western Governors University, 2023b). In both instances, there is a chance that the student could have avoided failure, anxiety, and some frustration if they had taken the time to read through the material they were provided with. However, given the scenario and information learned during WGU’s orientation, it is best to take a step back and reevaluate the situation with a clear mind. Going forward, the student
should use this failure as a learning experience and apply it to future courses. The information for OA’s is given and so are the procedures that need to be followed for PA’s. The student can take this time to collaborate with their course instructor to develop a personal study plan and to see the constructive criticism given as an opportunity to improve and pass. B.     Good afternoon (mentor’s name), I was reaching out to you today regarding my current courses OA and PA. As I’m sure you’re able to see, I didn’t pass either. When taking the OA, I was required to rearrange my room, and that disruption in the beginning caused me extreme anxiety. That in itself led me to not be focused and recall the information I needed to pass. For my PA, I didn’t read through the material and I was ultimately unprepared. I have since read the student handbook, printed off the requirements for creating a secured testing space, and followed the “ALERT” checklist, as provided by the WGU Knowledge Center (Western Governors University, 2023a). By doing this, I think it will help lessen my anxiety and I can focus on the information I have learned and pass. I have reached out to my course instructor, and while waiting for a reply, I have found and printed all of the course materials and began reading the material. Tonight, I am attending a live study cohort and signed up to receive the recordings. As my mentor, I would like to discuss with you two goals that I have in hopes that you could offer any suggestions that would aid in my successful course completion. My first goal is to read all of the course material and create a study plan based on the areas that need improvement on the first OA. I have set aside regular times throughout the day to study the material. For my PA, my goal is to look at the suggestions made,
