Question One
Ghansah was able to do extensive research about the subject before recreating the scene, with several months of preparation. She can offer a detailed retelling of the story of terrorism by Dylann in a manner that demonstrates a high level of understanding of the environment where the crime took place and the perpetrator’s characteristics that are captured in the account provided. Secondly, she immersed herself in the story and walked through the course of events surrounding the terrorist attack on a church. Rachel makes an interesting ending by saying that she carved in the sand the names of Dylann’s mass murder, where he had only written hatred. She also emphasizes Roof’s unsuccessful attempt to challenge God, emphasizing the impossibility of trumping the eternal (Ghansah, 2017). Thirdly, the piece is a masterclass of drama and vital information presented in a way that adds insight into the deep recesses of the murderer’s mind.
Question Two
Ghansah’s efforts to unravel Roof’s murders’ mystery reveals white supremacy ideologies as the fundamental cause of Roof’s actions. In the literary piece, Roof suggests that he
is under no obligation to explain himself. Ghansah’s account of Roof’s actions suggests that most cases of terrorism involving White Americans go unidentified without scrutinizing the case to determine how the radicalization took place and merely focuses on humanizing the case. Roof’s account appears like that of a troubled kid coming from a shattered home. She suggests that white supremacy is a common idea held by many so that Roof’s racial slurs and talk about committing murder did not arouse suspicion from friends (Ghansah, 2017). I agree with the
3
notion presented by Ghansah because there is enough ground to establish a bias against Black Americans as a significant contributing factor to the crime.
