He was born in 1856 in what is now Croatia and studied engineering and physics in Austria and Hungary before moving to the United States in 1884. He worked for a brief period at Thomas Edison's company, but soon left to pursue his own vision of AC power generation and transmission. He patented the rotating magnetic field, which is the basis of most AC machinery, and developed the three-phase system of electric power transmission, which is still widely used today. He also invented the Tesla coil, a device that produces high-voltage sparks and is used in radio technology. Tesla was a visionary and a prolific inventor who contributed to many fields of science and engineering, but he died in 1943 in relative obscurity and poverty. He patented the rotating magnetic field, which is the basis of most AC machinery, and developed the three- phase system of electric power transmission. He also created the Tesla coil, a device that produces high- voltage, low-current, high-frequency alternating-current electricity, and experimented with wireless power transmission, radio communication, X-rays, and robotics. Tesla's work had a profound impact on the development of modern technology and earned him a reputation as one of the most visionary and influential scientists of all time.
