Lab 5 – Capacitors Complete the following lab on Capacitors and upload on Canvas. Capacitor Lab: Basics : Inquiry into Capacitor Design This lab uses the Capacitor Lab: Basics simulation from PhET Interactive Simulations at University of Colorado Boulder, under the CC-BY 4.0 license. https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/capacitor-lab-basics/latest/capacitor-lab-basics_en.html Learning Goals: Students will be able to: Identify the variables that affect the capacitance and how each affects the capacitance. Determine the relationships between charge, voltage, and stored energy for a capacitor. Relate the design of the capacitor system to its ability to store energy. Explain how to use a capacitor to light a bulb. Describe what happens as charge drains away from a capacitor into a light bulb Develop your understanding: Open the Capacitance screen, then explore to develop your own ideas about how a capacitor is designed. Explain your understanding: Use your own words and captured images from the simulation to show you can: 1. Identify what features of a capacitor can be maximized or minimized to make a capacitor with the greatest capacitance. - The separation of the plates and the plate area. a. What features of the simulation did you use to help you? 4/7/2020 Loeblein https://phet.colorado.edu/en/contributions/update-success/5449 page1
- They helped to see if there was changing factors for the capacitance and it was shown that they do have an influence as shown below. 2. Design experiments to find the relationships between charge, voltage, and stored energy for a capacitor. Summarize your experimental procedures and findings. - We could find a relationship between voltage, charge, and stored energy if we were to connect two plates to a battery and test the relationship between the voltage and charge. We can accomplish this by changing the voltage on the battery that charges the plates. When we change the voltage, it will then show a proportional relationship to the charge allowing them to decrease and increase if one of them decreases or increases. - Another test that could be used to see the relationship between voltage, charge, and stored energy is connecting the plates to a lightbulb system and see how much of the energy is stored within the plates changes. This will be showing the amount of energy stored is drained by the lightbulb so the charge in the plate will decrease showing a proportional relationship between the charge and stored energy. a. What features of the simulation did you use to help you? - Battery, voltage, plate size, separation distance and lightbulb features . 3. If you wanted to design a capacitor system to store the greatest energy, what would you use? - I would include a dielectric because this would allow the capacitance of the capacitor to increase without having to change dimensions or the capacitor. The plate area could also increase which would allow more charge to come into the plate allowing more energy to be stored. Develop your understanding: Explore the Light Bulb screen to investigate how to use a capacitor to turn on a light bulb. 4/7/2020 Loeblein https://phet.colorado.edu/en/contributions/update-success/5449 page2
Explain your understanding: Use your own words and captured images from the simulation to show you know how to use a capacitor to light a bulb. 4. What are the required components to use a capacitor to light a bulb and how does the system operate? - Required: battery, charged plates, and stored energy. For the system to operate it is important for the plates to be charged by the battery and to store enough energy so the plates can hold depending on the area size. 5. How would using a capacitor to light a bulb compare to using just a battery as shown: - Due to the capacitor storing energy to the light bulb allowing an inconsistent lighting or current traveling through the bulb. A circuit on the other hand with a battery will allow a constant current making the lightbulb lit. a. Use Circuit Construction Kit Intro screen to test your ideas and provide supporting evidence. 4/7/2020 Loeblein https://phet.colorado.edu/en/contributions/update-success/5449 page3
