SCS 100 Module Two Activity Template Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples. You do not need to conduct outside research, but if you use sources, cite them using APA style. Describe how individuals are presented in all of your advertisements. He is yelling. Jeep: Groundhog Day - Bill Murray o I see a man in bed, wearing a black coat and gray scarf. Stronger Together o I see many men and women wearing different clothing and heights moving around on the sidewalk using various tools. Describe the actions being taken by the individuals in all of your advertisements. Dove, Sky Witness: Empowering Idents o The people in this advertisement describe themselves, their life obstacles, and their successes. They present themselves as proud and confident despite their disabilities, scars, hair color, and tattoos. 1
Hyundai: Smaht Pahk o The advertisement starts with a man standing on the sidewalk holding a cup, and a woman approaches him with a dog. They start talking, and a man pulls up in a car and gets out. The man and woman on the sidewalk start talking to the man leaving the vehicle. The man hits a button on his car's remote, and the car parks itself. All three people start talking about the car's self-parking feature, and two other men join. One man from an open window and the other on the street behind a truck. Jeep: Groundhog Day - Bill Murray o In this advertisement, the first man wakes up and gets out of bed. He walks down the sidewalk and talks to a man approaching him. The first man walks towards two other men and a groundhog, and he takes the groundhog and gets into a Jeep. The first man drives away with the groundhog and performs various activities. Repeat. Stronger Together o In this advertisement, the people are working together to make a mural out of Post-it notes in order to support the LBGTQ+ community. They are showing love, kindness, inclusivity, and support for all of those that live within the community. Explain whether social scientists can be genuinely objective when conducting research. Scientists are still humans. Therefore they cannot be completely objective when conducting research, as emotions find their way into our decision-making and how we observe things. Tone, facial expressions, and body language make up much of the communication between people. This form of communication is highly objective and dependent on the interpretation of the viewer/recipient. Discuss how consumer biases may impact the interpretation of your advertisements. Consumer biases may impact the interpretation of Stronger Together, as not everyone agrees/supports, or believes in that lifestyle. Regarding the Dove advertisement, not everyone believes women should be in the workforce. Others believe that in order to be respected, a woman needs to look as ‘normal’ as possible, with no tattoos, plain hair color, etc. The Hyundai advertisement may make people feel slighted, as though they can’t do a simple task such as park their car. The self-parking feature is not a necessity in order to use the vehicle and thus will make the car more costly, which may also keep people from purchasing it. The Jeep advertisement may impact the consumer as they already know the basics of the ad within the first few seconds - Groundhog Day-. Many people can relate to the feeling of being stuck in a rut. Therefore may be influenced to buy a Jeep once they see all of the ways Bill Murray uses it on his adventures. 2
