GSP 510: Andaman 2.0 islands B Y : D EEPAK T RIPATHI 28 TH OF A UGUST , 2021 Introduction The Lap 01 of GSP 510 is aimed at creating at creating our own paradise island in ArcGIS Pro, this exercise id to help the students get familiarized with the ArcGIS software package and introduce them to some basic tools. The learning objectives of this lab are as follows: 1. Introduction to the basics of ArcGIS pro. 2. Creating a simple map in ArcGIS pros using basic tools such as create and modify. 3. Developing basic knowledge about GIS. In this lab assignment a virtual island with the name of Andaman 2.0 has been created hear the Andaman & Nicobar island chain, off the cost of India in the Bay of Bengal sea. The virtual island has following features: 1. An island 2. Two water streams 3. Trees 4. Houses 5. Roads connecting various houses and streams Figure 1 Map showing the location of my island: Andaman 2.0 in the Bay of Bengal. (Source: https://www.naturalearthdata.com/) 1
Deepak Tripathi GSP 510: Andaman 2.0 islands Methods The detailed methodology involved in the creation of this virtual island is as follows: A. Selecting a location for your island: You can choose to select any part of the word to make your virtual island. I have chosen a place near the Andaman & Nicobar island chain as another small island near them would be I ideal tourist destination and I have appropriately named it as Andaman 2.0. B. Connecting Source Folder: Once ArcGIS is successfully opened the source folder where the original data is stored should be connected to the current map. C. Digitally creating Island, streams and Trees: To create a digital island with all of its attributes by digitizing. A shapefile needs to be created for each of the attributed we wish to display on our island i.e one each for islands physical space, streams, roads, trees and houses. For the island area choose polygons as geometry type, for roads and streams choose polylines as geometry type and for trees and house we have to choose points as geometry type. By using create and modify tools in the edit we can create the islands and its various attributes. D. Symbols: For better and creative representation symbols for various attributes such as trees, houses etc. are created. This can be done by right clicking on the name of the attribute in the tables contents, such as trees and then selecting the symbolize tool. This tool will allow the user to define the shape, size and color of the symbols used to represent the attribute, in this case a tree. E. Calculation of various geographical data: ArcGIS pro allows us to calculate various spatial and non-spatial data include finding the area of Island (polygons) and the length of streams and roads (lines). To make such calculations we need to add fields to the attribute table which is displayed below our map. We need to Area, Stream length and Road length and the field type should be double so that large number can be calculated using them. F. Layout and creating final maps: After the final map is created, the created virtual island has to be represented in such a format that it can be used in a report. The new layout tool in the insert tab can be used to create a final layout which can then be used in our final report. Additionally, a few key information’s should also be added in the layout along with our display map such as: i. The north arrow ii. A scale iii. Name of all the islands & iv. The list of legends Results The island Andaman 2.0 is located in the Bay of Bengal, near the Andaman & Nicobar island chain. The total area and dimensions of other attributes, such as stream length and road length are as mentioned in Table 1. August 28, 2021 Page 2 of 4

The aim of this lab assignment was to introduce the basic functions of ArcGIS pro software and familiarize the class with few of its features via lab exercise of creating this island. This short report is provided as an example of how to represent spatial information in a document created with Microsoft Word. August 28, 2021 Page 3 of 4

Deepak Tripathi GSP 510: Andaman 2.0 islands Through this lab assignment, I was able to familiarize myself with the basic factions of ArcGIS pro. Going forward I need to explore more with the tools that I have used in this assignment so that I am more use to them and can troubleshoot the problems which arise while using ArcGIS pro. Acknowledgements I would like to thank Professor James Graham and the Humboldt State University for me the ArcGIS pro software and the vector data for creating this report.
