Topic 5 DQ 2
Research and briefly describe each of the five features of effective language and literacy
instruction: (1) explicit instruction, (2) systematic instruction with scaffolds, (3) multiple
opportunities for student practice, (4) assessment and progress monitoring, and (5) feedback.
Which of these features do you think will require the most intentional planning? Rationalize your
choice.
There are five features of effective language and literacy instruction, the first being explicit
instruction.
This is where the teacher directly instructs the students and models what they want.
Explicit instruction deemphasizes the learning of language structure until competence has been
met.
Systematic instruction scaffolds the lessons, building upon the skills or concepts that are
known previously.
In this approach sounds are taught before words then sentences and finally
passages of reading and writing.
Multiple opportunities for students to practice is a hands-on
technique that often incorporates speaking, listening, writing, and reading together.
Assessment
and progress monitoring uses information gathered from skill surveys and observation to modify
lessons as needed.
Feedback in effective language and literacy instruction needs to be
accurate, consistent, and trustworthy.
The feature that I believe will require the most intentional
planning is systematic instruction with scaffolds.
Concepts must be in relation to the previous
concepts taught and specifically planned out.
This requires the teacher to examine the end
product and work their way backward to establish the steps that are needed.
