Planning Your Internship Thao Huynh Grand Canyon University: EAD-519 Clinical Internship 1: Learner Centered September 24, 2023
Planning Your Internship I will be interning at Nimitz High School, working closely with not only the principal, Mr. Stewart, but also assistant principals Lidia Calderon and Matthew Hayes. The duration of the internship will be six weeks, beginning on September 21 and ending on November 2. My schedule will align with the school's operational hours, which are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., plus any additional time after school. I have picked several of areas of concentration that correspond with the Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC) requirements to accomplish the requisite 90 hours of leadership activities. The focus of these activities will be on teaching law and finance, mirroring the ideas covered in EAD-505 and EAD-510. I will work closely with the school's finance department for 15 hours over the course of six weeks to comprehend the planning and processes used by each department that has a budget line. Assemblies, activities, extracurricular, and co- curricular will all be the subject of a financial study. This will entail going over financial records, examining spending trends, and figuring out where things may be done better. The ELCC Standard 5 is aligned with this activity: "A building-level education leader applies knowledge that promotes the success of all students by ensuring the
management of the organization, operation, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment.” (2011) I will work with Mr. Hayes and Mrs. Calderon for 20 hours on producing a new teacher handbook while also evaluating and updating current policies. Conducting research and creating policy papers will be required. This exercise adheres to ELCC Standard 1: "A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a school or district vision of learning supported by the school community." (2011) The remainder of my internship will be devoted to student supervision, extended days   and school event   at the school. These exercises will provide me the necessary tools for leadership, problem-solving, organization, and communication. This exercise meets ELCC Standard 2: A building-level educational leader "applies knowledge that promotes the success of every student by sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning through collaboration, trust, and a personalized learning environment with high expectations for students." (2011) I will provide artifacts including a budget analysis report, a revised "new teacher" handbook, and weekly reflections on the tasks finished throughout the week to record my activities and their alignment with ELCC criteria.

I will arrange frequent meetings with Mr. Hayes and Mrs.   Calderon to go over my progress, ask questions, and get feedback on my actions to collaborate and communicate with my major mentor efficiently. My GU faculty supervisor will get weekly updates from me outlining my successes, difficulties, and intentions for the following week. Through adhering to this internship plan, I want to achieve my goals of gaining valuable experience in educational administration, expanding my understanding of educational law and finances, and showcasing my mastery of the ELCC requirements.
